Today we’d like to introduce you to Paula Mejia
Hi Paula, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
From a young age, art was an integral part of my life. Both my parents were artists—my mom was a painter, and my dad was an architect. I was captivated by my mom’s paintings and my dad’s designs, and I knew I wanted to pursue a career in the arts. However, I also grew up in a Hispanic household, where being an artist was not considered a respectable career. Consequently, I abandoned my dream of becoming an artist and followed the conventional path, attending school.
Graduating from UCF, I felt lost. I wasn’t fulfilled in my chosen career. I briefly considered returning to study illustration, but a few friends suggested I explore tattooing. Initially skeptical, I delved deeper into the industry and quickly fell in love with the idea of not only designing tattoos but also having people wear them on their bodies. After that, I spent the next few months building a portfolio. I then approached my mentor, Tyler Jenkins, and asked for an apprenticeship. And that’s how my journey as a tattoo artist began.
I’ve been tattooing for a little over a year now, eagerly anticipating the opportunities that lie ahead.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It certainly hasn’t been an easy journey. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I believe that any career that genuinely interests you is challenging. It demands hard work and dedication.
Initially, I faced resistance from my family regarding my chosen career. There were constant arguments, and it was definitely taking a toll on me.
The initial phase of my apprenticeship was also a struggle. I’m sure that many artists can relate to the challenge of working part-time while simultaneously completing a lengthy and demanding apprenticeship.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a tattoo artist and I specialize in realistic black and grey, and fine line tattoos! I love to put a stylistic twist on animal and fictional character tattoos, but I also love to capture the essence of my client’s loved ones. It’s something that challenges me but also plays into my strengths as an artist. Other than that, and more importantly, I’m proud that I can bring a welcoming and warm environment for my clients, always keeping things comfortable and collaborative.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
To be patient. I’ve always been one to want things to be done quickly and perfect. But after starting this journey, I learned to give myself time. Time to hone my skills. Time to build clientele. Time to build experience. I realized how easy it is to lose track of the progress made when you have this one idea of success. Things take time and I believe what is for you will come to you.
