Today we’d like to introduce you to Primal Instict
Primal Instict, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It all started in 2018, our singer and drummer met at a party on the back porch of one of their friends’ house. That’s when Grayson (our singer/guitarist) met Matt, the drummer for the band. They got into conversation about music, talking about Led Zeppelin and other classic rock bands as well as rap artists. Matt then mentioned that he plays the drums. I told him that I play guitar and we should jam sometime.
A few months pass and we finally get together to check out the drums. Grayson thought he was really solid and definitely wanted to work with him. Unfortunately, he had to move to Atlanta for a couple of years but they kept in touch. Eventually he told me that he’s moving back to Orlando. We started getting serious about starting a band, playing together often but we figured needed a bass player.
Matt had an old cheap bass lying around in his music room so we gave it to another friend to learn. God bless that friend for putting in the effort to learn bass on such short notice and join the band! From then, we would have weekly practices where I’d bring in ideas and we would work on them. Thus, Primal Instinct was formed.
After a few months of creating our own songs, I wanted to record them and have them on streaming platforms before we played our first show. We recorded 5 songs at Red Lion Audio and released our self titled EP shortly after.
The next question was, “how do we even get a show?” We had very few connections to the music scene in Orlando and we didn’t know what to do. So I came up with the idea to host a party in my friend’s backyard. The show ended up being a success (considering we had no idea what we were doing). Then we decided to hit up some promoters that were suggested to us by our producer.
Our friend who played bass for us ended up leaving the band months before our first REAL show to focus on getting a career. We understood, no hard feelings.
We then had another friend who agreed to play bass for us, we played some shows with him, but due to some scheduling issues, he left the band.
Going back in time to a show we played at a kava bar, we met Leo. He played bass in another band at the time and our bands have already played a few times together beforehand. But we then got to know him personally. We talked about music, politics and everything in between. We ended up exchanging contact info.
Eventually, Leo became a fill in for our last bassist. But eventually, ended up being a permanent member. With Leo as our bassist, we became a more strong and determined band.
Side note: during this time we had a 2nd guitarist, but ended up leaving to pursue his music career.
Nowadays, we are steadily growing and playing more shows in new cities, growing our social media and fanbase as well as creating new music. We are very proud and excited to show the world who Primal Instinct is.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was definitely challenging. We had a lot of people coming in and out of the band.
On top of that, we faced financial issues with equipment breaking and needing to replace them, managing social media. The list goes on, there’s definitely struggles but there’s nothing we can’t figure out. As long as we all work as a team and communicate we can overcome any obstacle.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We are Primal Instinct, a punk band from Orlando, Florida. We’re known for our high energy and fun shows. Our fans love to have crowd interaction in our shows through chants, moshing, dancing, and even conga lines. What sets us apart from other bands is our determination but also we don’t do things by the books, we just like to be ourselves on stage and show our personalities. We also make it a goal that every single person who watches our show, end up having a big smile on their faces. Also, we never leave a venue without thanking the promoter, venue owners, other bands, and fans for the opportunity they give us.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is something that is earned through hard work. Success would be our name being known to the masses. Success is having people relate to our lyrics on a personal level. We don’t care about the money, we just want to see a sea of people singing to our music.
