Meet Robert Knight of High Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Knight.

Hi Robert, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I founded the Howard T. Odum Florida Springs Institute in May 2010. Our mission is to conduct springs health assessments, recommend restoration needs, and educate the public and state agencies about the importance of springs and the aquifer they depend on.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
FSI is a private non-profit, entirely funded by donations and grants. We receive no funding from the state and local governments. This allows us to provide reliable data and management recommendations without political pressure. But this also means our budget is limited, and we cannot study and protect all of Florida’s artesian springs equally.

Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
I am an environmental scientist with more than 40 years of professional experience studying and protecting springs, rivers, lakes, and wetlands. I conducted my doctoral studies at Silver Springs under Howard T. Odum, the grandfather of springs science; I am leading FSI as a full-time volunteer without compensation. During the past 12 years, we have accomplished much, including a dozen spring restoration plans, an analysis of the major stresses on springs, the organization and leadership of Springs Watch volunteers, and much more. Our work is included on our websites: www.flroridaspringsinstitute.org and www.floridasprings.org.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Everybody who is “in the know” loves the springs as Nature’s watery miracles. Despite that broad support, our state leaders are not doing their job to keep these fragile ecosystems healthy. An informed public is our best hope to reverse the continuing degradation of Florida’s springs.
