Meet Robin Leigh of Buttercream Dreams Bakery, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robin Leigh.

Hi Robin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started baking as a teenager and enjoyed making custom cakes for my teachers. That later grew into other custom sweets I would make in my early 20s for family and friends. Once I became a parent, I did what most parents did and would use a custom baker I found locally or a grocery chain to order my cakes. This worked well for me until I made my daughter’s 7th birthday cake. I made her a cute unicorn cake and thought to myself that this was something I could attempt to do more often to help save my family money. I consistently started to bake cakes and other desserts as my father progressed in his cancer diagnosis, and I found myself needing an outlet for myself emotionally/physically. Having two kids and a dying father was hard on me, on top of dealing with the pandemic. Baking was my way of finding myself again and finding a way to express myself creatively.

You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
My baking has come a long way within the last year, and I look forward to getting better and better. Anyone who bakes or creates anything by hand knows there will be some struggles along the way. I have had my fair share of them in the baking process as well as the process of building my business. Some of the struggles I have experienced are with failed batches of buttercream, cake making, trying new recipes, and decorating. Since starting my business, I have struggled with getting customers and pricing my products so that it pays me for my time and profit to continue to build and grow. Competition from other locals in the area has caused an even bumper road, but I am determined and will not give up.

As you know, we’re big fans of Buttercream Dreams Bakery, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
My business is a custom order-centered home bakery. I mainly offer custom cakes, cupcakes, various flavors of cookies, brownies, cocoa bombs, crispy rice squares, large breakable hearts, and other sweet treat items. I am set apart from other bakeries by allowing my customers to dictate the flavor and design of their cakes. I am most proud of my signature Oreo ganache filling that pairs well with my signature marble cake. I am also very proud of my business name and logo, as it was created after both years of wanting to start my own business, and I was dreaming of different custom cakes and buttercream flavors I could create for my customers.

Please talk to us about happiness and what makes you happy.
God, first and foremost, makes me happy. He makes me happy even when I have nothing to be happy about. He gives me hope and light in a very dark world. He saved my soul and made all things new through him. Without Him, I would truly be nothing.

My husband and children bring me endless joy. They are the reason I do all that I do. I want to show my children that regardless of their circumstances and what is happening in the world, they can do whatever they put their minds to. I want them to know that if they have a talent, they should not hide that from the world but rather embrace it.

My sisters and my nieces/nephews also make me very happy. My sisters are my lifelong best friends and they are people who understand better than anyone what life has been like. We may not always agree, but we always have a great time together.
