Today we’d like to introduce you to Shana Henry.
Hi Shana, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Breakfast is our family’s fave meal! I founded Muffhens after many years of failed attempts to find allergy-friendly muffins and breakfast options for my oldest son, who just turned five years old. My son is severely allergic to eggs, dairy, nuts, tree nuts, sesame and is very sensitive to soy, fish, corn, and preservatives. For a while, he lived on fruit, chicken tenders, and fries to the point he no longer wanted to eat any of them. It was then that I realized something needed to be done. He started to dislike parties because he could not enjoy the food and cake. We got tired of telling him, “No, you can’t have that buddy,” and began working on solutions.
We would always have to cancel breakfast outings or take food into restaurants which was always interesting for sure. Every week, I make vegan muffins and they’ve become a household staple. When family and friends join us for breakfast, they always rave about how amazing the muffins are. I have been cooking and perfecting my muffins for three years now and am finally ready to share them with the world! We are sure you will enjoy them. We’ve been selling our muffins and learning so much from our customers, ensuring that we’re keeping them happy!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Entrepreneurship is always a bumpy road for sure. Struggles have included balancing family, carving out time for rest and self-care, selling products for a fair price as well as warrants profits. Depending on your small business, finances can be a struggle and has been huge for me. Learning the ins and outs of pricing, cost have been a challenge but something that I’m certainly overcoming and proud of!
As you know, we’re big fans of Muffhens Bakery. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Muffhens is a 100% gluten-free, top 12 allergy-friendly, and vegan bakery that makes deliciously yummy muffins, cookies, and oatmeal bakes. We offer baked goods for those with very restrictive diets and limited baked good options due to life-threatening allergies. We are known for the “non-cardboard” vegan baked goods!
I am most proud that I can provide a solution for people who have bland diets and the fact that people with restrictive diets can have a taste of sweet goodness. What sets us apart is that (1) we are free from the top 12 allergens: dairy, eggs, gluten, nuts, tree nuts, soy, fish, corn, sesame, mustard, celery, and preservatives, (2) we’re produced in an allergy-friendly facility, and (3) Muffhens are made with real fruit and does not contain and natural color or flavors.
I want readers to share our company with everyone they know with severe allergies. Please know you do not have to be diagnosed with allergies to enjoy; we have quite a few customers who purchase because they’re seeking a healthier baked good option. We ship nationwide!
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Covid-19 definitely increased the baked goods industry and research shows that the trend will continue. There will also be more allergy-friendly, gluten-free, and vegan options.
