My journey into the lash industry is one of resilience, determination, and a commitment to never give up. It all began when I moved to Tallahassee, Florida, during a challenging time in my life I was homeless and fighting to find stability. Determined to change my circumstances, I worked tirelessly to get back on my feet and eventually enrolled in school.
While in school, I received a financial aid refund that was, at the time, the most money I’d ever had in my life. I saw it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a better future for myself. I knew I wanted to pursue a career in the beauty industry, but starting a makeup business felt out of reach due to the high cost of supplies.
One day, a fellow student asked if I could be a lash model for her to practice lash extensions on. As I lay there, I couldn’t help but think about how excited I was to get lash extensions and realized many others likely felt the same. That moment sparked an idea—I wanted to learn how to do lashes. When I shared my thoughts with a friend, she gifted me a lash training course for my birthday. That thoughtful gesture changed the trajectory of my life.
I began practicing on anyone who would trust me to work on them. With time and dedication, my skills improved, and I started building a loyal clientele. My passion for lashing, coupled with the ability to enhance someone’s confidence and beauty, only grew stronger. Eventually, I opened my own salon, So Shik Lashes, and even started training others in the art of lash extensions.
This career not only helped me overcome homelessness but also allowed me to create a life I’m deeply proud of. It’s incredibly fulfilling to share the skill that transformed my life while empowering others to feel beautiful and confident. So Shik Lashes represents much more than a business it’s a testament to the power of perseverance and the belief that beauty can truly change lives.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
When I first started my lash business, one of the greatest challenges I faced was building a strong and loyal clientele in Tallahassee. It required patience, consistency, and a deep commitment to delivering quality service. Now, as I begin the journey of restarting my business from scratch in Orlando, I’m once again navigating the process of establishing connections, earning trust, and growing my client base in a new market. While starting over comes with its challenges, I’m approaching this opportunity with renewed focus and determination to rebuild and thrive.
