Today we’d like to introduce you to Solange McKenzie.
Solange, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always loved fashion and style; I describe my story as starting before I was even born. My grandmother and my aunt were both seamstresses, my mother taught me how to sew and look for great garments growing up, however, because of my height (for context, I’m currently 6ft 2in), I always struggled to find clothes that were long enough for me… especially as a middle and high schooler who was constantly growing!
I started building my brand as a Tall Girl Content Creator just after graduating from college. I was looking for a way to channel my creativity, share my love of fashion and bring visibility to tall women in the fashion industry. I wanted to create a brand in myself that highlights my height and helps other tall girls and women style clothes to feel confident. I wanted to be the stylish, tall role model and voice I wished for growing up.
Today, I bring my full self to my community as a source of empowerment to tall girls and women who love fashion and luxury.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been smooth. My biggest struggle was building my own confidence back up. After feeling torn down and self-conscious the majority of my life, I had to unlearn everything I thought about myself and re-program my mind by loving myself exactly as I am. For everyone reading: Remember, self-love is an ongoing journey, some days will be harder than others and that’s okay. Keep pouring love into yourself, especially on those hard days.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a content creator who focuses on empowering tall girls and women through fashion. I also include sustainable fashion and Black Girl in luxury fashion/lifestyle in my content as well.
For my community of tall women, I share clothing brands that cater to tall bodies (I have also created a free guide that lists them), and ways to style garments from retailers who don’t carry tall clothes. Additionally, I share motivation for tall women and I am a voice for the tall community by starting the conversation about what it’s really like for tall women and what we need from the fashion industry.
I also love to be proof that Black girls/women are worthy of luxury and quality life. And we should live that life unapologetically! However, I also share how to affordably achieve that luxury goal, because I believe it should not break the bank either. I emphasize the quality that will last, no matter how you attain it!
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
My commitment to my community. My presence online wouldn’t be anything without them. They keep me motivated to provide them with quality and helpful content. I am here for my community, to help by sharing knowledge, and encouragement, and by being their voice. I put myself in certain spaces to break down the doorway so they can finally feel seen and heard.
