Today we’d like to introduce you to Talii.
Hi Talii, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been around music for as long as I can remember. If it wasn’t my mom playing different genres of music in the house all the time, it was my dad playing the piano, producing, or taking me to the studio with him. I started taking piano lessons when I was 6, and I started writing songs around that time. I knew that this was what I wanted to do forever in 6th grade, and I performed a song I wrote and recorded over a beat my dad produced. It was my first experience being on a mic and recording in a studio, and I fell in love with the process. I even uploaded it on MySpace music, haha. Through the years, I performed in talent shows, sang the National anthem at games, did open mics, and when I got older, I performed downtown pretty often. I tried to get out there as much as possible. I also posted covers and acoustic songs I would write on YouTube and Instagram. In 2015, I met Tony of Dnamusikgroup after he saw a cover I posted on IG. After a few years of development, We released my first singles in 2018 after working with my now partner & main producer, G Bliz. Since then, my music has been heard by millions of people all around the world. Both of them helped me bring my vision to life and helped me to become the artist I am today. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. I’m grateful for where I’ve been, where I am now, and where I’m going. It’s mind-blowing, honestly! And to think, I used to play covers in a coffee shop.
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
It’s been a challenging road. I’ve struggled with extreme depression, anxiety, and PMDD for most of my life. Though I’ve been going through a big healing process for the past few years & things have been so much better, it used to be something that affected me 10x worse than it does now. I canceled things at the last minute because I couldn’t perform mentally. I’ve even bailed on a performance because I had a panic attack on the way. There were times I wouldn’t release music for 6 months or more because of a depressive cycle. Along with that, I was also a young stay-at-home mother who had very little time to dedicate to music. But I did what I could to make it work through all of that, and I’m thankful for the support system I had along the way!
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a singer, artist, and songwriter. I am more in the RnB / alt RnB space right now, but I am expanding my sound and exploring new facets of my identity. The most popular song I have is from 2020, called Good to Be Bad, which has over 1.5 million streams on Spotify alone, which is crazy! The song I’m most proud of, or the one I love the most, would be pointless numbers because it’s a real, vulnerable, relatable song that has impacted many people. I’m most proud of the messages I’ve received from people saying how that song has helped them feel seen and heard. I want to be a positive light in people’s lives. What most people comment on and what sets me apart from others is my tone. Many people say I have an “angelic” or “ethereal” tone & I think that’s what makes me different from other RnB singers. What sets me apart is that I have an amazing team/family around me that helped me elevate in every way. The growth and the quality of my sound and creative process are great because of them.
Can you talk to us about the role of luck?
We create our luck because it’s a mindset and based on belief. I used to believe I was broken and unworthy, so that reflected in my life and my career. But now I’m worthy of achieving my dreams and living my desired life. I believe in being talented and capable of being successful, and since I adopted a new mindset, I started seeing more of that everywhere around me over the years. I began to see more success in my career & more opportunities, and I also experienced more happiness, community, and creativity than ever.
