Hi Tamara, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a military veteran and a mother of three, I was always juggling various roles. But a turning point came when I decided to list a single room in my home in Dunwoody, Georgia on Airbnb. I was working as a legal assistant for the federal government at the time and was looking for ways to supplement my income. To my surprise, the revenue from that room didn’t just cover my mortgage, it also gave me a chance to indulge my passion for travel.
That was when I realized that the short-term rental market had a lot more to offer than just supplementary income. Eager to learn more, I sought mentorship and started volunteering my time and skills. It was a trade-off for first-hand training in the field of vacation rentals. The journey was hard, no doubt, but those three years of dedication and persistence turned out to be the best investment I ever made. Armed with the knowledge and experience I had accumulated, I decided it was time to venture out on my own. And that’s how Bucket List Stays was born.
Today, we’re not just a short-term rental business. We’re curators of unique, adventurous experiences operating in 13 different markets. We’re in the business of offering lifestyle investment opportunities, transforming unconventional spaces like tiny houses, containers, and houseboats into unique vacation rentals. Looking back, I realize that it was that single room in my Dunwoody home that sparked this incredible journey. The path wasn’t always smooth, but every step, and every challenge, shaped me and my business, making us what we are today.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey to where I am today has been anything but smooth. Imagine navigating a ship in stormy seas, and you’ll get a sense of the challenges we’ve faced. When COVID-19 hit the world, it wasn’t just a bump in the road; it was a massive barricade. Our operations came to a standstill, mirroring the lockdown that the whole world had gone into.
But the pandemic was just one part of the story. Our industry is still evolving, and with that comes the constant shift in policies and county permitting changes. It was a bit like playing a game where the rules kept changing. We had to stay agile, keep a pulse on the regulatory landscape, and pivot our strategies accordingly.
Despite these hurdles, we’ve managed to persevere and forge ahead, coming out stronger on the other side. Every setback has been an opportunity for us to learn, adapt, and innovate, making our journey all the more enriching and our success story all the more rewarding.

If I were to highlight one individual, it would undoubtedly be Alvin Cavalier of Your Space STR. He’s been more than just a mentor; he’s been a guiding light, a source of inspiration, and a sounding board for my ideas. His wealth of experience in short-term rentals has been instrumental in shaping our business model.
