Meet Tara Guzman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Guzman.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Ever since I was a little girl, I always showed an interest in cooking. In fact, I used to often pull a chair up to my grandma’s stove so that I can stand on it in order to help her cook. As I got older, that passion stayed with me. I worked at a Culinary School when I was in my mind and late twenties, but still never never went down that path to a culinary degree. My job experience there actually led me into eventually getting my Master’s Degree in School Counseling and helping students. Even with working in the school environment, I still had a deep desire to try my hand in cooking for people other than our friends and family. After much discussion with my husband, we finally decided to move forward with this passion and open a food truck. That is how Burgerz and Ballz eventually came about!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Opening a food truck has definitely been a challenge for us. We did not how much went into the process, and believe me, there were definitely tears and frustration on my end. Once we overcame that hurtle, it was time to open our “doors.” We had invested so much energy into coming up with recipes, tons of taste testing, licenses, certifications, other parts of opening a business, and I was FREAKING OUT opening those “doors” to the public. Were people going to enjoy our food? That was one of the biggest scares for us.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Like I mentioned earlier, I am a full-time School Counselor, and my husband is a full-time Project Manager for a kitchen restoration company. So, at this time, we are working the food truck only on the weekends. We will eventually work Full Time on the food truck and are so excited about it. We have a great menu featuring foods that other food trucks do not have. We are getting positive feedback from our community regarding our menu items, and we cannot wait to spread the “food love” with so many others.!

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
We have definitely had a lot of support from our family and friends and are so thankful for them. My brother is a long-time chef and previous restaurant owner and has guided us a lot during the process. Our friends and visiting family members have been our taste testers while creating and recreating the food items over and over again, and there were definitely no complaints regarding that process lol. But the biggest support they have provided was the love while cheering us on throughout the way.
