Today we’d like to introduce you to Tera Smith.
Hi Tera, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Interior design has been my passion for as long as I can remember. As a child, I wasn’t interested in playing with Barbies—I was too busy arranging the furniture in their Dream House. That early love of creating spaces led me to take every interior design and architectural drafting course my high school offered.
I always knew I wanted to run my own firm one day, but I also understood the value of experience. I spent the first ten years of my career immersed in the industry, learning from seasoned professionals, navigating real-world challenges, and developing a deep understanding of what makes a home truly livable and beautiful. Each year, I strive to refine the client experience—taking courses, connecting with designer friends, and using client feedback to keep evolving.
One of the most formative experiences in those early years was designing a model home for a firm in Winter Park. I loved the freedom of crafting design schemes that would help the home sell, but I also discovered how much strategy and detail goes into a model—more than most people realize. I’ve always thrived on challenges, and that project sparked a love for solving problems creatively, which is why renovations have become a specialty of mine. When unexpected issues arise on-site, I see them as opportunities to make the design even stronger.
Today, my firm has grown from handling single-room projects to offering full-service design. We’re often brought in at the very beginning—sometimes even before an architect is hired—so we can think through the flow of the home, how each space will function, and how the design can support the client’s lifestyle from day one.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, but every challenge has helped refine how we work and serve our clients. Starting and growing a firm comes with learning curves—from managing timelines and budgets to balancing creativity with the realities of construction and renovation. But I’ve always believed that no experience should go to waste.
In fact, we pull from our personal lives just as much as our professional ones. A few years ago, I built a pool at my own home, and the lack of communication throughout the process was incredibly frustrating. That experience stuck with me. As a result, we now send weekly updates to all of our clients, giving them a clear view of what’s happening, what’s coming up, and how their project is progressing. It’s been a game changer in terms of transparency and peace of mind.
We’re constantly evolving—listening to client feedback, learning from industry peers, and applying those lessons to build a better process. Every challenge has shaped us into a more thoughtful, intentional firm that’s focused not just on beautiful results, but on a truly supportive experience from start to finish.
As you know, we’re big fans of Smith Interior Design. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Smith Interior Design is a full-service design firm that specializes in creating sensory-rich, highly personalized spaces that feel both elevated and livable. We’re known for our thoughtful process, clear communication, and the ability to manage projects from the earliest conceptual stages through final installation. Whether it’s new construction, a full-scale renovation, or complete furnishings, we believe good design starts with understanding how a space should feel—not just how it looks.
What sets us apart is our holistic approach. We often join a project before the architect is even involved so we can help shape the flow, function, and soul of the home from the ground up. We think about everything—how the light hits the room, how furniture will fit and function, and how materials like wood and stone can create lasting impact. Our designs are rooted in nature and emotion, and we believe the best spaces evoke something deeper than style—they feel like home.
One of the things I’m most proud of brand-wise is how we’ve created a client experience that’s not only beautiful, but also smooth and transparent. We’ve taken every lesson we’ve learned—both professionally and personally—and turned them into systems that support our clients. Weekly updates, thorough communication, and a team that’s truly invested in every project make all the difference.
We want readers to know that working with us means you’re getting more than a pretty room. You’re getting a partner who’s thinking ten steps ahead, a team that’s passionate about the details, and a finished product that’s timeless, layered, and completely tailored to you.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the balance between listening and leading. It’s essential to truly hear what a client wants—but part of our job is also helping them explore possibilities they may not have considered. Sometimes what a client asks for on the surface isn’t what will serve them best in the long run, so we gently guide them toward options that align with their lifestyle, enhance the flow of their home, or elevate the overall look and feel.
It’s about earning trust—so they know we’re not just trying to push an aesthetic, we’re helping them make smarter decisions that will feel right for years to come. Some of the most rewarding moments are when a client says, “I never would have thought of that, but I’m so glad we did it.” That’s when we know we’ve done our job well.
