Meet Thuy-Lien Nguyen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Thuy-Lien Nguyen.

Thuy-Lien, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Frolic Creations was born during Covid-19. It was a hard time for all of us. Being an artist, I wanted to use my art to bring joy to everyone around me. But honestly, I didn’t know how at the time. Then one day, an idea suddenly came to me. I wanted to turn washing hands – a very crucial activity to combat the pandemic – into a fun and enjoyable activity. I wanted to make the cutest soap ever! I had no knowledge of how to start a business and no experience with making soap at the time, so I spent hours after hours learning about everything through books and the internet. To this day, I’m still learning.

As I move forward, the idea keeps expanding. I realize that with or without a pandemic, our lives are full of stress, and self-care is very important. According to my customers’ feedback, I truly believe that my products can bring joy to a deeper level than I had originally thought. It gave me the motivation to work hard and improve my products. I pay close attention to not just the look but the feel of the products. I try to turn soap into a kind of sensory toy, which soon became my customers’ favorite. My jelly soap collection is a hit because of how fun they are to watch and use. I’m very grateful for my journey with Frolic Creations so far and I hope for the best in the future.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning a business for the first time is very overwhelming. There are so many things to learn while having to run the business at the same time. On top of that, designing a new product can take up to months. To toggle between trying to balance my work and my life is hard. All of that leads to a lot of stress, and sometimes, creative block. While I was trying to bring joy to everyone, I myself was losing joy in my work. Over time, I became better with time management and the job became less stressful. I was trying too hard, and I burned myself out, and it was an important lesson moving forward.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Even though I sell self-care products, I treat them like works of art. I’ve been an artist all my life. I even went to art school and graduated as valedictorian of my class. I have tried many mediums in my life but weirdly, soap is my favorite. It’s very fulfilling to see my art can bring joy to people’s lives, especially to an aspect that I think that no one has ever done before.

How do you think about luck?
I have always believed in my luck growing up. And in business, I think I have a lucky star following me around. After one month of starting my business, it went viral on TikTok and the number of orders coming in was unbelievable. At that time, I didn’t even have enough soap to sell! I can’t say enough how thankful I am for the support from the community.
