Today we’d like to introduce you to Ulonda Theodore.
Hi Ulonda, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am where I am today because I was inspired by Aunt Marjorie. I still could remember this day when I see how she transformed this woman’s hair into something so beautiful. It was shocked how a hairstylist can uplift people from the inside and out. However, I wasn’t sure if that was something that I wanted to do because Haitian culture influences you to be in the medical field. I spent my college years trying to figure out what I really wanted to do. I couldn’t find a career path because I was afraid to choose a career where I was not happy with the decision I made. Until one day my sister Queenie came to me and talk to me. She said I see the passion in your smile when you do hair and how my eyes light up. Then told me I should consider being a cosmetologist. That is the day I told myself okay just give it a try. When I got into the beauty industry I fell in love and that was the best decision I ever made.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It wasn’t a smooth road. The school I gone to file for bankruptcy. The school shut down during half my term in school. They made the decision to graduate me without completely completing the course. At that very moment, I was on my own with no guidance. I felt like a lost puppy in the beginning in the beauty industry because there were certain services I couldn’t provide to my clients. However, I took the time to learn from another hairstylist to improve myself to give my clients the best.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a cosmetologist, and I specialize in protective hairstyles. I am known for growing hands. In the curly hair community,, it’s quite difficult for us to have healthy hair because the majority of us aren’t aware of how to properly care for our hair. What sets me apart is my work is neat and I make my clients feel as if we are family.
I am most proud is every time my clients step out of my chair, they always feel beautiful inside and out.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
When it comes to supporting the word of mouth is key, especially through social media. At the end of the day,, I am not only doing it for me, I am doing it for my clients and my potential clients. The way to work with me is we have to have the same common goal that we have to accomplish with a positive mindset. For example, creating creative content to spread the word about what services we provide on social media.
