Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Rohal.
Hi Victoria, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My earliest memory of wanting to be a makeup artist started when I was 10 years old. I used to love watching “Syfy’s Face Off”with my dad. Seeing the artists create and reconstruct actors into these original characters was so fascinating to me. I knew I wanted to work in movies, I just didn’t know how. Thankfully my passion for makeup artistry never wavered. I graduated Valencia College and began my makeup journey at the “Vocation Academy of Makeup and Prosthetics” (VAMP) here in Orlando. I got my certificate for their Modern Effects Makeup Artistry program and their Beauty Professional Makeup Artistry program. This truly began my transition into making my passion into a career. Since graduating from VAMP, I’ve been able to work full time as a freelance makeup artist. I’ve used my beauty artistry skills for various TV/film productions, special events, and as a makeup artist for MAC Cosmetics. Additionally, I am an SFX airbrush/prosthetic makeup artist for Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando. I’ve also been hired by Blue Whale Studios for Seaworld Orlando’s Howl-O-Scream event. I’ve won numerous awards for my makeup artistry in the Organization of Independent Filmmaker’s film festival. I truly enjoy transforming everyone that sits in my makeup chair. Whether that’s making brides feel beautiful on their special day or making actors into scary monsters. I’m continuing on this journey of making sure my childhood dreams persist to become my reality.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t have a traditional job by any means. Finding out where to go to school, if this was a feasible career, those were all questions I had no idea how to answer. Makeup is such a niche job to have and researching where to even begin was incredibly difficult. I was constantly told that this wasn’t a “real career”. Not being able to find information readily available was discouraging at first. Maybe everyone was right, this wasn’t an attainable dream of mine. But, I am very fortunate to have such supportive entrepreneur parents. They supported this decision of mine from day one and never allowed me to give up on it. Without them, I would have never been able to be where I am today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a professional special effects and beauty makeup artist. For special effects, I specialize in prosthetic and airbrush makeup. I also sculpt/fabricate things like masks and prosthetics in various mediums, such as silicone, foam latex, etc. For beauty, I specialize in clean beauty for film/TV productions and special event makeup. Such as weddings, quinceaneras, prom, etc. I’m most proud of my ability to master any medium thrown my way. I genuinely love learning new techniques from my peers and growing my skill set. I feel that is what sets me apart from other artists.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
As a makeup artist Covid-19 really pushed the importance of proper sanitation. I pride myself on being extremely cleanly during makeup applications. I’m constantly working with so many different people from all over the world. Making sure my sanitation is not only important for myself but, also for the health and safety of my clients.
