Meet Yamira Johnson of Breaking Bread with Mira

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yamira Johnson.

Hi Yamira, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My journey in the food industry began out of a need for more wholesome food options. While still raising in the corporate world back in 2010, I began to volunteer with local nonprofits assisting with event planning, community projects, and fundraising among other things. After much consideration, and feeling encouraged by our circle of family and friends, my husband and I jumped on the opportunity to open a catering business with a wholesome approach to food preparation. With a new education in food safety management and planning, Breaking Bread with Mira, Inc. was born.

During that process, I started experiencing changes in my body. More fatigue, inflammation, and increasing chronic pain. Frustrated by the little options available to deal with these, outside of just being prescribed hardcore medications, I was led to become a holistic life coach. My own experience dealing with chronic pain and inflammation, motivated me to learn how I could learn better habits that encouraged wellness.

Little did I know then, my pain became my purpose. I was led by traditional and functional medicine experts who shared research, protocols, and processes with a holistic approach to dealing with autoimmune and other lifestyle diseases. They taught me how to use food as a tool to improve my health, and how to apply a holistic approach to our services.

Last year, as part of our branding growth, we’ve launched SupperWholesome.com, to continue serving wholesome meals to those who want to eat better, and don’t know or don’t have the time to cook at home. We also offer live and virtual holistic cooking classes to county libraries, medical practices, and private organizations, as well as, events catering to local patrons.

Now, as a wife of one, mother of four young adults, and grandmother so far, of eight little pieces of heaven, I’m able to enjoy being an entrepreneur, educator in the community. My wellness journey, allows me to help other people enduring chronic pain and inflammation due to lifestyle diseases, find effective tools, resources, and a new tune in life.

As I continue to learn and share, Breaking Bread with Mira, Inc. has grown to become a local brand our customers trust to serve them wholesome meals and functional medicine protocols to improve their lives and enjoy their wellness journey while living and aging well.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I can say with confidence that the road has not been smooth. However, I can also say the bumps on the road have taught me how to problem-solve, become effective with my time and make efficient decisions.

Starting a business from scratch because of that gut feeling that there’s purpose in the plan can be nerve-racking. There’s a lot to learn on the back end, like choosing the right business structure, understanding taxes, insurance, licensing, recruiting, marketing, production, distribution, and honing skills to offer the best product or services, one can offer.

Building from zero to secure a budget can be especially difficult. Also, finding a suitable location to operate our catering kitchen was an uphill battle, and now it’s been quite a challenge to secure staffing support. Nevertheless, once those issues have been addressed and dealt with, the satisfaction of serving our customers well and living them satisfied sure offsets the challenges.

I’ve learned to be intentional and look at every issue, mistake, or mishap as a learning lesson, a new best practice we can add to our standard operating procedures to improve our plan and mission.

This journey has allowed me to earn my scars and my stars!

What makes you happy?
What makes me happy? That’s a great question. I’m a fan of simplicity and peacefulness. However, they don’t come without a fight to claim them. Above all, closeness to my creator, my family, my home, nature, kids, puppies, cats, food, and music.

When I’m teaching a holistic best practice or recipe and someone says, “oh, I did not know can do that”, that makes me happy. When I serve someone food and they realize that they can enjoy food with flavor and still good for you, that makes me happy.

A few years ago, I had a customer who was referred by a doctor so we could make their meals according to his recommendations. She was struggling with gut and hormonal issues and Dr. Carrozella wanted her to eat a Mediterranean diet, but she could not eat onions, garlic, and other basic seasonings and condiments. I was tempted to decline the assignment, I did not think I could help her, without using such common ingredients.

However, by coming out of my cooking comfort zone, I was able to learn how to season and prepare her meals as instructed by her medical provider. After our third week working together, she sent me a tear-jerker thank you email.

“Mira, thank you for cooking for us! I was able to eat without fear of being in pain. We are so thankful for what you do!” To know that someone can sit down and eat a plate of food full of nutrition while enjoying full flavors, and have peace of mind of not dealing with pain. That right there makes me very happy!
