Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Scott.
Amanda, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
During the summer of 2020, my oldest daughter asked if we could try learning how to sew. We happened to have a lot of time on our hands, and the next day my mom brought over her sewing machine. The three of us sat down at our dining room table, and my mom taught us the basics of how to sew! I fell in love with sewing immediately. I had watched my mom sew my entire childhood, but for some reason, I just wasn’t really interested. I am SO thankful that my daughter suggested that we learn together because it revealed one of the biggest passions of my life!
Over the next six months, I really went “all-in” into the sewing world. With help from my mom, The Sewing Studio in Maitland, Florida, and the support of all of my family and friends, my new hobby began turning into something more. I decided to try my hand at machine embroidery and instantly fell in love with that too. I just couldn’t get enough of the sewing and embroidery world and spent countless hours learning and making everything from tooth fairy pillows to elf accessories, dresses for my girls, and the list goes on and on.
The idea of teaching kids how to sew began floating around in the back of my head, but I honestly wasn’t sure it’d ever really become a reality. Prior to discovering my love for sewing, I was an elementary school teacher. I taught in Seminole County Public Schools Grades 3-5 for 10 years prior to taking a leave to stay home with our youngest. From a very young age (5th grade actually), I knew I wanted to become a teacher. I absolutely LOVED my years in the classroom. I do miss being in the classroom from time to time, but I’m so thankful that my new passion for sewing can now be combined with my love of teaching!
Five and a half years after first learning how to sew, I now offer homeschool sewing lessons during the school day while my girls are in school, and once a month on Saturdays for traditional-school kiddos from right here in my home sewing studio. I also make and sell Beginner Sewing Project Kits which include the measured and cut fabric for the project, pattern tracing template, a step-by-step written tutorial with pictures of each step, and a YouTube video to follow along with as well. These project kits are actually used in the Maker Lab at South Seminole Middle School where students can come before school to learn how to sew! It’s so exciting to see children and teens interested in and having fun learning to sew!
From October-December, I pause my sewing lessons to focus on my busiest season for the retail side of this small business dream of mine-making and selling elf accessories to sell locally at craft shows and on my Etsy Shop! All throughout the year I also make and sell tons of other sewn and embroidered products and continue to learn how to make and embroider more fun things every week.
It’s been an incredibly fun ride so far, and I can’t WAIT to see what lies ahead for 2026 and beyond!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It really has! I’ve been very blessed and I’m so thankful to be able to work from home. It has grown slowly and steadily, at a pace I’m able to keep up with while still making sure I’m there for our girls.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am able to combine my prior experience of teaching children in the classroom, with my new passion of teaching sewing. I create lesson plans for my sewing lessons including full step-by-step picture tutorials of the projects we sew together during our lessons. This is so that students are able to go home with all of the tools they need to be able to sew the project again with fabric that they purchase, if they happen to have a sewing machine at home. Those who don’t, often find that a family member has a sewing machine they can use, and other families end up purchasing one for their home! It’s so much fun to watch each student’s sewing journey unfold.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Road trips and traveling! We had so much fun going on trips together and I’m so thankful to be able to now make those same types of memories with our girls.
