Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Shinn.
Hi Amy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m the owner and founder of Village Pilates, and movement has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I started teaching dance and aerobics when I was 14, and I’ve always loved the way moving my body makes me feel. A dance injury in my early years introduced me to Pilates, and it completely changed my path. After art college, I dove deeper into the method—and quickly became obsessed.
I completed a classical Pilates certification and have continued learning ever since, seeking out as many different instructors and styles as I can. With over 30 years of teaching experience, I’ve made it my mission to stay on the cutting edge of fitness while always keeping Pilates at the core.
Village Pilates is truly my pride and joy. I was one of the first in Brevard County to bring in TRX Suspension Training, HIIT, Barre, and Pilates Circuit. I love blending innovation with tradition, and I’m always looking for new ways to help people move better and feel better.
Fifteen years ago, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition, which only deepened my commitment to staying strong in both body and mind. That experience reminded me just how powerful movement can be—not just physically, but emotionally and mentally too.
What brings me the most joy is seeing my clients grow—getting stronger, building confidence, and achieving goals they once thought were out of reach. The community we’ve built at the studio is so special. It’s a space where people of all ages, shapes, and fitness levels can come together and celebrate the joy of movement. Honestly, it feels like a big, supportive family—and I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of it.
Sharing this passion has been a lifelong dream come true.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s hard to believe I’ve been in business for almost 16 years. I opened Village Pilates in 2009, right in the middle of the financial crisis. I didn’t have a formal business plan—just a deep passion for Pilates and a solid base of loyal clients. I’ve always been someone who figures things out as I go, and that mindset carried me through those uncertain early days.
Like many entrepreneurs, I made my fair share of mistakes in the beginning. I worked constantly and, admittedly, burned myself out. It didn’t take long to realize that even when you love what you do, balance is essential. Not long after, I faced serious health challenges that could have ended both my career and the business. But thanks to an incredible network of friends, family, and supportive instructors, I was able to recover and keep the studio going.
Then came the pandemic—easily the most stressful chapter of business ownership. Fortunately, I had just moved the studio into a smaller space with lower overhead, which turned out to be a blessing. We were forced to close our doors for four months, but we quickly pivoted to online classes via Zoom. That flexibility truly saved us.
It hasn’t always been easy, but each challenge has shaped who I am as a business owner and strengthened the foundation of Village Pilates. I’m proud to say that not only did we make it through—we’re thriving today.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The best thing about our Pilates studio is that we really get to know our clients as people. That means we are able to work with them one on one and focus on their specific needs. Some places are like reformer factories, but here, we don’t offer big group classes. Even our mat classes are small and focused on the individuals. That way, the clients get real attention to detail and can advance in their practice. I’m proud that all our instructors and I get to create a fun and supportive atmosphere.
