Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelina Mongiovi
Hi Angelina, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up I always had a passion for makeup. I was that girl in middle and high school who would sit in her room and do the most intricate eyeshadow look she possibly could till 3 in the morning because why not? It was an escape from everything. As I got older and started deciding on my career nothing made me as happy as doing makeup does. That’s when I stumbled upon VAMP, a school that’s sole focus is makeup. As I went there I feel deeper in love with makeup as I began to take on more of the special effects side of things. Since then I’ve never looked back.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As with most things in life it wasn’t naturally, but the harder I work and the more I put in the more I get out. Makeup is definitely a career where you have to push yourself beyond what you think you are able to do. You never know what you are capable of if you never try and you can’t get better at makeup if you don’t try and practice till you get it right. Although it can be defeating sometimes, there is no greater feeling than creating art you are proud of.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
One thing I don’t like to do as an artist is put myself in a box. I’m a makeup artist, a lot of what we do doesn’t fall under just one category. Some days I’m applying a skull prosthetic for a shoot, others i’m making an 8ft blood canon for a movie. That’s what I love about this job, it’s never just one thing.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important thing I’ve learned so far is that not everyone is on the same timeline as you. As an artist, it’s easy to beat yourself up for not being that the same place someone else is at. But I’ve learned nothing good can come from comparing your progress to others. Everyone is on their own journey, as long as you work hard and keep trying your progress will speak for itself.
