Today we’d like to introduce you to Ansa du Toit.
Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
My father’s enthusiasm for photography inspired me, and my passion flared after the birth of my two children. I started taking as many photography classes as possible at a local school called Crealde School of Art and began practicing daily. I loved the challenge of the technical workings of a camera and the creative outlet it gave me. As a young adult, I believed I had no creativity as I was a math nerd and had worked as a computer programmer for many years prior. In a search to continue my education and passion and to connect with other like-minded photographers, I joined the Orlando Camera Club. I currently serve on their board of directors after holding the presidency during 2020/21; before that, I served as their competition director for 3 years.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey has been amazing, but as a mother of two wonderful teens who demand a lot of attention, my focus is very much divided. My time with them is so short, and wanting to make the most of that has taught me a lot about time management and being more effective.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. What can you tell our readers who might need to be more familiar with what you do?
I enjoy various genres of photography, including Fine Art, Portraits, Dance, and high-speed water drops. My favorite portrait work is with high school seniors; getting to know them and listening to their stories and future dreams gives me a peak into an extraordinary time of their adult journey. It allows me to create something that is uniquely theirs. As a fine art photographer, I strive to make a photograph that is not seen before and shows my subject differently. It may be soft and obscured, tight macros, the unseen shapes of water dancing, or just an abstraction of reality. Photographing dancers is the epitome of portraits and fine art combined. It is technically quite challenging and rewarding. Both my kids are dancers, and being able to marry these two loves in my life brings me so much joy. I have exhibited and sold several photographs at various local art galleries around the Orlando area. I also enjoy participating in local photography competitions from which I have a few ribbons and trophies to show.
Can you talk to us about the role of luck?
Lady luck is a good friend of mine, and I love saying that I have been so lucky, but the truth is I have been blessed, and the path we take in life and business is guided by faith and hard work.
