Today we’d like to introduce you to Bas And Catalina Nijmeijer
Hi Bas and Catalina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
A Family Affair: How The Little Dutch Bakery Rose in Orlando
Forget storybook cottages – this is the real deal! Nestled in the heart of Orlando, The Little Dutch Bakery is a testament to the power of family, passion, and a whole lot of flour power. But this isn’t your average fairytale. It’s a story of three baking enthusiasts – Bas, Catalina, and Nathaniel – whose combined love for the craft kneaded itself into a thriving business.
Our tale begins with Bas, a Netherlands native with a serious case of wanderlust and an even more serious love for baking. Though his career as a chef took him around the globe, his heart remained tethered to the comforting flavors of his childhood. Think stroopwafels with a whisper-thin crunch, speculaas cookies spiced just so, and appeltaart that would make Oma proud. Between whipping up culinary masterpieces in professional kitchens, Bas was constantly experimenting, perfecting the recipes that danced in his memories and collecting new ones along his journey.
Meanwhile, Catalina, a Colombian-born teacher with a creative spirit, felt the pull of the pastry world. Trading in lesson plans for baking sheets, she returned to school to pursue her passion, earning a degree in Baking and Pastry.
And let’s not forget young Nathaniel, who inherited his parents’ culinary genes! This budding chef, a finalist in the Florida Department of Agriculture Florida Future Chef Student cook-off competition, proved that baking talent runs deep in the family.
With such a talented trio under one roof, it was only a matter of time before magic happened. It all started with Catalina’s entrepreneurial spirit. She decided to take their baking hobby to the next level, offering their creations online. The response? Overwhelming! Orlando embraced The Little Dutch Bakery with open arms (and hungry mouths).
Bas, a finalist in the Florida Senior Living Association Annual Chef Competition, was blown away by the community’s support. “We love creating connections through every loaf of bread or sweet bread,” he shares, his voice filled with gratitude. “We didn’t expect this outpouring of love for our products.”
Today, The Little Dutch Bakery is more than just a source of delicious Dutch and international treats. It’s a family affair, a testament to the power of shared passions and a reminder that sometimes, the best recipes are those baked with love.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
While The Little Dutch Bakery’s story is one of sweetness and success, the path hasn’t always been sprinkled with sugar. Like any rising dough, their journey has faced its share of challenges:
Finding the Right Balance: Juggling a family, other jobs (Catalina’s teaching and Bas’ chef work), and a burgeoning business was a delicate balancing act. Long nights, early mornings, and finding time to wear all their hats was a constant challenge.
Space Constraints: Starting a cottage bakery from home presented its own set of hurdles. Limited oven space, counter area, and storage meant careful planning and creative solutions to maximize their output.
Despite these obstacles, The Little Dutch Bakery persevered. Their passion for baking, combined with their strong family bond and unwavering support from the community, helped them overcome each challenge and rise to the occasion. It’s a testament to their resilience and a reminder that even the most delectable creations require time, effort, and a dash of determination to come to fruition.
