Rising Stars: Meet Brian Demeter of Oviedo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Demeter.

Brian Demeter

Hi Brian, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
In the early 2000s, when I graduated from Valencia College with a degree in graphic design tech, I had a friend who was also pursuing that degree. When he would see that my graphic designs were illustration-heavy, he asked why I hadn’t considered becoming an illustrator. His wisdom was sound. So, I was a professional illustrator for Children’s Publishing (Picture books, educational work, etc.) for years. I had a rep and everything. Then, around 2008, illustrators found our work drying up due to the economic crash. After that, I found myself doing my creative works, which led smoothly into the fan art scene, and now I do various things. I’m mainly recognized for my wood-burned acrylic cut-out paintings with a wooden background and my stickers with the same aesthetic.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was a bumpy road, but I was riding in a jeep. The bumps were quite enjoyable, leading to insights and wisdom. One of my main struggles was when I first started; I was surrounded by several cut-throat style artists with overly inflated egos. Over time, I knew to set boundaries, and now I’m blessed to be surrounded by fellow artists who care for each other and root for each other’s successes.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m most known for my wood-burned acrylic cut-out pieces on wood. My artwork is stylized with thick black lines and vivid, solid colors. I have stickers made as well, which match the aesthetic.

We’d like to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
I tend to view all the bad as still “good,” maybe not when it’s happening, but when I look back on it, I can see the lesson. My openness to going with the flow helps. “Flow” is my favorite word. It’s also “Wolf” backward, which is perfect because I love wolves.
