Rising Stars: Meet David Hutchinson

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Hutchinson.

Hi David, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As a child, my family watched Sasuke -also known as ninja warrior, then now is called American Ninja Warrior at the dinner table. I was still a kid in elementary school, I had no interest in tv shows besides cartoons. I slowly started to give in and watch it and started to like it and understand it. I told my family I can do that, I want to do that… years later, I looked up a ninja warrior gym when I was in 6th grade and I started my training. I went out for a run this one day and crushed 4 miles. I then started the savage race in 2016 and I placed 1st in my wave (open heat). After that I was doing ninja warrior and obstacle course racing. I was good in school I usually focused on my self and I didn’t have many friends but I had much of attention that my high school featured me in the magazine there. I was nice I was just insecure with kids at school because I was really mature and know what I’m doing, unlike party’s and other stuff… after my first savage race, I started racing pro and elite races and took 1st for age divisions and like top 20-30 overall out of the whole race. I also did the spartan race and other OCR races.

I qualified for their North American championships and I qualified for obstacle course racing world championships. But covid has changed all that for me and I’m ok with waiting… right before graduation from high school 2020, American Ninja Warrior called me in my last class saying, “I got the call” to be on the show. I’ve been telling everyone and everyone knew that I wanted to be on the show since 2016 so no one cared at the moment then covid happened and I didn’t get to walk the stage but I walked across the American Ninja warrior start stage in my cap and gown then everyone started to care. I’m a big underdog… up to today’s date I’m waiting for the call again to complete on the show.

I’m also trying to join the US Air Force or some branch of the military ASAP for careers and retirement and to get stronger and better and have respect. I will attend college through them though I have Florida pre-paid college because I’m adopted. I now work and workout and study full time with no time to waste. I’m quite busy that I got off some social media apps for the time being or I’ll check them after a few days for like a minute. I’ve been through a lot and my determination has taken me wherever I put my mind too. I’ve also made many of friends out at O.C.R races and gyms that I train at and traveled too. I also meet just about every ninja warrior and is just crazy that I competed against the stars and am apart of it all. I’ve also been featured on websites for ninja warrior gyms and savage race website.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No after saying my attentions for years, many people lost interest in me and thought it will never happen. It motivated me. I was teased and picked on a lot in school till I made it. Money, I had to work a lot and sometimes my parents would help me for my travel and competitions and it made me feel bad.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I work a basic job full time at lazy days RV Tampa. I’m an escort around the resort driving a golf cart, taking the trash out and do whatever work needs to be done, such as cable checks, electric checks, fixing stuff, cutting trees, guest services etc. I enjoy it it’s like summer camp I get to meet and know new things from many people and sometimes see them again. My co-workers like to gloat about me being a ninja warrior and the guest will be amazed and take photos with me and stuff. It’s awesome but very time consuming and tiring.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Anyone can be very creative at home with workouts, cleaning, cooking, entertainment etc. social media has taken a big role in the communication and entertainment of many people’s lives. Most food at your house is eaten than wasted because your home and stores are closed.
