Rising Stars: Meet Debra Richardson of Apopka

Today we’d like to introduce you to Debra Richardson

Hi Debra, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my career in dentistry in 1988 as a dental assistant. Originally from NY, we moved to FL in 1989 where I continued dental assisting, teaching, managing and mentoring new team members. I loved taking care of patients and building long lasting relationships, but I always had an entrepreneurial spirit! I have a love of cooking that was handed down through my Mom and Grandmother, and I wanted to focus on that, so in 2022 I said goodbye to dentistry and hello to Morning Sunshine Eats food truck. I specialized in breakfast, and was based in Mt. Dora and Eustis, FL. I realized that the restaurant life was not fullfilling and I closed my doors. I recently obtained my Health and Life Insurance License, and I now work in the insurance field. My husband and I are also co-owners of a brewery in Apopka, FL.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Anyone that has ever owned their own business, knows about the countless hours and sleepless nights, but being a business owner can be very rewarding!
There are many struggles in the food industry, rising food costs, liability insurance etc..

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I currently work as an insurance agent, specializing in Medicare and Life Insurance. I enjoy it and it helps me help people with some of the things that are most important to them, like being prepared for life’s events.
I am proud of myself for starting my own business in 2022, realizing what makes me happy and what makes me thrive and realizing when to quit.
I also like to spend my free time volunteering in different groups, I serve food weekly to those in need at a local church, I work with children at the Creative Hub of Apopka, and I volunteer with the Apopka Police Dept Citizens on Patrol.

How do you define success?
Success, to me, is the freedom to create, evolve, and positively impact others. I’ve worn many hats—from dentistry, to food to insurance, each venture has been a reflection of my passions and a way to connect with people in meaningful ways. Success isn’t about one big achievement; it’s about the little wins—helping a client, making someone’s day easier, or building a community around what I love. If I can wake up excited about what I do and know I’m making a difference, then I’ve succeeded.
