Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Derrick Wright.
Hi Denise, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My family moved to Satellite Beach, Florida in June of 1979 from Massachusetts and it was a big change from living through the Blizzard of 1978 to Hurricane David in September of 1979. I was young but still have vivid memories of the pure force of Mother Nature…especially going from snow and sleet in a blizzard to wind and rain of a hurricane! I think this is when my passion for nature really started….just to experience our natural environment and being so thankful for the opportunities I have had living in the beachside community.
Growing up in this beautiful little city was an amazing time with so many fond memories I will never forget. Living just two blocks away from the beach, I could enjoy it anytime I wanted too. Whether it was for the morning sunrise, afternoon time on the beach with friends or late night walks along the shoreline in our late teenage years was simply something to do back then.
One of my greatest experiences in the summertime on our night walks was when we would see a Mama Sea Turtle come up onto the beach, dig their nest in the sand, watch her lay her precious eggs and travel back into the ocean. The sad thing now is that all seven species of Sea Turtles are endangered and finding ways to help save them.
Fast forward to today, and my passion for these amazing creatures, I found an opportunity to help give back to their research by joining a newly launched family-owned company that donates a portion of each product sold to Sea Turtles through purchasing their natural products made for skin, hair, your household and so much more! To find two things I love (nature and Sea Turtles) in one company is such a blessing and I just want to continue to share and help others through teaching how important it is to use natural products vs. synthetics and chemicals.
This is when I decided to start sharing my love for the beach, the sunrises and Sea Turtles with others who love them too! Over the years, it has turned into a great experience that no matter what I encounter on the beach, it is an amazing thing to see and I want to just share! Each and every sunrise and wave crashing onshore will never be the same again, and there is something so awesome about that.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some of my struggles early in life that have carried into my adulthood has always been being the “shy girl” or introvert in the room. I loved finding a seat in the back of the classroom and the feeling of being safe BUT if I was ever chosen or called on to talk, my voice would crack, I would have stage fright (even though I wasn’t on stage!) and just a feeling of overwhelm and scared of what others thought of me.
I admired the extroverts that could always put a smile on my face with their outgoing personalities and wished that maybe just one day, I could be like that too. Well, my feelings have not changed much, to not wanting to be the center of attention BUT I have learned that where I do shine is sharing my passion of nature with others and that it makes a difference in their life too.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work has always involved making others feel joy in what I am trying to send through my message or post on social media or in life. Whether it is through pictures, artwork or sharing my love of nature and knowing it can help change the way others look at things in a more positive light.
I am known for my early morning sunrise pictures and action shots of the waves as they crash on shore while the sun brightens up the horizon. What makes me most proud of these moments is that if someone is having a bad day or just waking up to stress and anxiety, hopefully seeing the posts I share would help turn it around even if for a brief moment and bring them peace and tranquility.
So many people in the world do not have a chance to see something I have the opportunity to experience each and every day, so who would not want to share that with others to make their day a little brighter?
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
One surprising thing about me is that I am NOT a morning person…but the inspiration I feel each morning at sunrise and listening to the waves is worth waking up for and sets my day off in a much more positive way.
One more thing I would love to share is that as I have gotten older, I cherish things so much more that were taken for granted in my younger years. Still living in the same city since I was nine years old, visiting the same beaches and the same surroundings of our city, I see it so much differently now. I LOVE having the chance to raise our family in this little town and to have them experience what I did growing up….riding our bikes anywhere we want, walking up to the local stores, ice cream shops and restaurants and even going to the same elementary, middle and high schools as I did. It is just a wonderful feeling of belonging within this community, Satellite Beach to me, is truly a little peace of heaven on earth.
