Today we’d like to introduce you to Eduardo Baldaci De Lima.
Hi Eduardo, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I dreamed of becoming a professional astronomer and working at NASA, until God called me to the Baptist pastoral ministry. However, I never lost the link between science and faith, becoming one of the few Brazilian pastors to advocate for Biblical Creationism.
I started writing about astronomy during my teenage years and, over time, developed my work in Scientific Journalism. I had the joy of hosting the only Portuguese-language TV show about astronomy—a project that will soon be returning to the air in the US on a Brazilian network.
Over the course of 43 years, across 20 cities, 2 countries, and 3 languages, I believe I have shown the celestial bodies to more than 500,000 people.
Today, I am the pastor of an immigrant community at The Grove Church in Titusville—curiously, the very first American city I visited when I was invited to tour NASA back in 2000. I never imagined that I would one day become a neighbor to the Kennedy Space Center (KSC)! Now, in addition to caring for the spiritual life of our community, I cover space launches in Portuguese.
I deeply believe that science and faith complement each other. My purpose is to inspire future generations to live in harmony with both.I like to say that while NASA leads people into space, I am helping lead people to the only way to heaven.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No journey with a purpose is ever easy. Navigating between science and faith is a passport to facing prejudice from both sides. People of science think you cannot have faith, and people of faith think you cannot do science. I know that religion and faith have been a dilemma for centuries, which is why I do not walk by religion, but by faith. History records countless names of scientists who had faith in the Creator. Some people accuse me of not caring for faith when I engage in science, to which I respond: When I defend faith before science, I am ensuring that future generations can defend their faith before atheists—and to me, that is caring for the Church.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Perhaps I am the only Portuguese-speaking pastor using astronomy as a tool to defend creationism. I have given interviews to nearly all major media outlets in Brazil, hosted the only Portuguese-language TV show about astronomy, and spoken at dozens of schools to thousands of students. In my culture, if a pastor only speaks about the Bible and religion, he doesn’t earn much respect, as he is considered a fanatic. My audience is more intellectual, which is why my discourse reaches into science
What’s next?
My plans for the future are to restart my astronomy program here in the US, reach the next generations by teaching creationism in Portuguese and Spanish, pass on knowledge to future leaders, and finish my books. Also, i want to increase more space coverages for my web site – www.spacenewshub.com
