Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriel Acevedo.
Hi Gabriel, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Remedy Tree started in 2015 as an avenue for me to share my songs. I was writing a lot at the time and figured starting a band was the way to go. We began with a folky indie sound. With the introduction of the banjo in 2017, we shifted toward bluegrass. I’ve always loved bluegrass but didn’t think I had it in me to lead a proper bluegrass band. Being Puerto Rican, I did not grow up around this music, and I believe that adds a fresh outsider’s approach to how I write and compose our melodies. Still, I kept studying the genre, surrounding myself with bluegrass players, and immersing myself in the scene. Growing out of the Florida folk music scene and entering the bluegrass scene, we’ve built a wonderful mix of fans from both worlds, selling out much of our summer album release tour this summer. With the recent addition of two of the best players in the region—Isaac Taylor and Nathan Beaumont—we’ve earned a name for ourselves as one of Florida’s most dedicated emerging bluegrass bands. We’ve since proven ourselves on the national stage, signing with Mountain Fever Records in 2024, landing second place at the SPBGMA Band Competition, and collaborating with artists such as Peter Rowan, Chris Henry, Jason Carter, Victor Furtado, and more. Remedy Tree made its international debut in 2024, playing in Ireland, and we’re headed to England this month (August). This is just the beginning—we’re starting to glimpse through the haze what’s in store for us. One thing is certain: We love the journey, from the small, mundane gas station stops to playing the Station Inn in Nashville, TN. We’re doing what we were meant to do.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been smooth at all. I think that’s what makes the journey so awesome, though. We’ve been through countless situations that felt miserable and hopeless, yet every single time, we’ve persevered and come out the other side stronger and more resilient. I wouldn’t have it any other way. But yeah, we lost our transmission going up a hill in the middle of nowhere in upstate New York. Our bus broke down in South Carolina, and we got towed to a very shady tire shop where we were ripped off after nine hours of waiting—and we missed our show. one year we broke down with every single vehicle we drove! Other than that, I’d say both a big challenge and a big blessing for us is making band life work with kids. We take them with us as much as we can; they’re part of this journey. It’s often hard, but so rewarding when you can give your kids such great and uncommon experiences on the road.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m the front-man, singer, songwriter, musician, and creator behind Remedy Tree. I’ve been part of the Florida music scene since 2009. I specialize in vibe. Hear me out: I’m not the best musician or intellectual, but I can feel when the energy and vibe are right. The songs I write don’t feel like they’re mine; I’m just the vessel, and i listen for them, letting it flow through me. I’m most proud of our persistence. Over the past decade, I’ve seen many musical projects come and go, but we decided never to give up. Watching all that effort start to bear fruit is an amazing feeling—I’m pumped and ready to go! What sets me apart is my ability to problem-solve. I’m an irrational optimist; where others see no way forward, I find a glimpse of hope and hold on to it.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I mentioned earlier, but I’d say it’s our persistence and commitment to stay the course no matter what. In 2023, we sold our house to pay off debt and live in an RV so we could pursue music more fully. There were deep lows in that process where I wouldn’t have blamed someone for giving up. Another strength is our ability to grow and adapt. We started as an amateur group with little industry knowledge, but we’ve grown into a recognized player in the scene. Persistence and Joy, I’d say, is our defining trait.
