Today we’d like to introduce you to Gemma Picano
Gemma, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I went to school at the University of Central Florida and graduated in 2021 with my Bachelors in Integrated Business. While in school I worked at Publix and also with brands on social media. After I graduated I moved to Jacksonville for a my first “big girl” job. I wasn’t a fan of Jacksonville so I found myself back in my hometown. I got my dream job with Disney as a project coordinator. I worked a 2 year contract with them and loved every minute of it and now I’m starting a new job as an Economic Development Coordinator in my howetown, Palm Coast. I plan to still work with brands and continue to grow my social media.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been smooth getting to where I am. It took me 5 years to graduate due to some health stuff. I was also in a long distance relationship with my now fiancé, so balancing school, work, and long distance was a struggle at times. My very first job out of college was not at all what I thought it would be, so learning to put myself first and leave to find what I loved was hard, but rewarding. In the midst of it all, my dad unexpectedly passed away. Dealing with grief is one of the hardest things you’ll ever have to go through, but having a strong support system helps you get through and continue on.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I just finished my contract with Disney recently. I was an IT project coordinator there and I loved it. I’m a very creative and analytical person. I was able to learn so much and meet amazing people. I never thought I’d get the opportunity to work at such a large company, so I’m really proud of myself for getting there. Helping deliver huge projects that were sometimes guest facing was so rewarding. My new role will be a little bit different, but I’m excited to use my creativity even more.
I’d say that my positive personality is what sets me apart. I try to always be positive even when things aren’t going well. I try not to take everything too seriously if I don’t have to.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I think most people wouldn’t know that I sometimes have imposter syndrome. It’s sometimes hard to understand how I’m doing some of the stuff I’m doing. I think most people think I have it all together based on social media, but I definitely struggle!
