Rising Stars: Meet Haley Marguerite Mariano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Haley Marguerite Mariano.

Hi Haley Marguerite, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I wrote ‘Charlie Takes an Adventure’ when I was 11 years old. It started out as a language arts project. My teacher gave the class a task to write a book. At the end of the school year, my manuscript was returned to me in a “hardcover” format. Boy, I was pretty excited to see my book in hardcover. When I showed my dad the book, I said, “Dad, how cool would it be if I can get this book published for REAL someday!!!”

Being 11 years old at the time, I had no clue how to get a book published. So this is what happened… My book sat on the bookshelf collecting dust for 13 years.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
So many people during the time I tried to get my first book published, Charlie Takes an Adventure would constantly discourage me to not publish the book. The discouragement came from family members, friends, teachers, librarians and even a boyfriend. This is what I would hear, “you’re way too young”, “it’s way too hard”, “It’s way too much money,” and a boyfriend told me: “you are not smart enough to publish a book!”

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
