Today we’d like to introduce you to Iris Ledesma.
Hi Iris, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Some of my influences have been my family. A lot of my extended family have been makers of different kinds. It’s something I carry in my blood. I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands and be able to make something out of nothing. My graduate degree has also played a major part on where I am today. I hold a Master in Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design. One of the reasons I chose to go to school there is because I wanted to learn about different disciplines (textiles, furniture, jewelry) and explore different materials. I graduated during the recession in 2009, where architecture and interior design were industries that were struggling. I wanted to put my design degree into use and so I created Estudio-iris. Estudio means to study. It’s where I study different materials and designs. Though it’s primarily jewelry design, I am also working on other product types, such as tableware.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. This is something I do on a part-time basis. I would love to someday make it a full-time gig.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
While I work on interior design full-time, I focus on making, creating jewelry for women part-time. What sets me apart creatively is my focus on details and the use of different materials. While I enjoy making a finished product for women’s everyday wear and it makes me happy whenever I see someone wearing a piece of mine, what makes me most proud is when I hear women tell me my pieces make them feel empowered. It’s one of the nicest compliments. It feels good and gives me validity when an accessory makes a difference on someone’s day.
