Today we’d like to introduce you to Jack Hill.
Hi Jack, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After a twenty year career as a mime, magician and ventriloquist i built and lived on a sail boat. While cruising in the Bahamas I discovered the sculpture studio of Randolph Johnson and experienced an ephpiny that lead me to study that art form. While living in the Florida Keys I apprenticed at a local bronze foundry to learn the technical side of the skills necessary to create good art. On my 49th birthday I poured the bronze metal for my first sculpture “Descent”,a mermaid and her captive sailor. Thirty years and hundreds of sculptures later I am still creating works of art that can be seen at art shows in Florida and my studio/gallery/home in Deland.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being an artist is not a “smooth” road, just by definition. The observation and interpretation of life is the way of an artist, and life is constant change. The highs and lows and the constant struggle of humanity are the ideas and subjects of my work, but it requires the time and focus to isolate from the world and gleen from the experiences the elements with which to tell a story.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My theatrical background influences much of what I create. Figurative work is a large part of my ouvre, but humor and whimsy also play a large role. Mermaids and ocean themes absorbed my early work with a healthy dose of classical influences.
Later on whimsy began to anthropomorphicize those figures, turning out apples with the figures of Adam and Eve, pregnant pears with swollen breasts, chili peppers doing a tango, and bananas with feet on rollerskates.
I also work in mixed media and wood carving to address emotions, politics, religion and the human struggle to find balance in an unbalanced world.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Financial success is being able to chose your path freely….artistic success is being able to look at a work you did 10 years ago and still feeling it’s message!
