Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie McAfee
Hi Jamie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started writing when I was a little kid. I have always enjoyed telling stories, and they always came out of my mind naturally. My Mother still has my first book, “My Cat.” I would write song lyrics, poems, and short stories and it just evolved throughout life in various formats. I took the time to teach myself formatting and writing rules for a few years and later decided to go back to school for film and creative writing. I was self taught but I wanted my degree in what I loved. I now am independently published, writing children’s books, comic books, novellas, screenplays, and more.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not always been a smooth ride for me, as there are always hurdles to overcome with any new writing project. The stories come quickly, but most work is completed after the initial process. You have to figure out what outlet to publish through and handle the copyright and formatting, and some projects include acquiring funds for completion. A lot of time has to be dedicated, so with that comes sacrifice. Once I got my flow and understood what I wanted to get done, things became easier, but I am still learning.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Right now, I am most known for my comic book Alexis Wyle. It is a book that I completed 13 years after I wrote it. I am very proud of it, as it has been my most challenging and gratifying work thus far. My children’s books “Bee Leave Me” and “There is a Spider in Moms Car” are a hit with children and adults. I have encountered a lot of people who are also excited about my novella “The Seed,” which I originally wrote as a screenplay. I will be doing more with that project soon. As a writer, I stand out because of my versatile writing ability; everyone can enjoy something I have released.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The most important key to my success is not giving up and always returning to what I am setting out to accomplish if I hit a roadblock. No matter how long it takes, I get it done. I am a go getter. When it was time to spread the word about my comic book I went to Megacon and walked around with a sign around my neck to get people interested in what I was talking about. I know if I don’t move and promote my work, no one else will, so I make it happen.
