Today we’d like to introduce you to Jullian Bascome.
Hi Jullian, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My story? How much time do we have?!? To make it a long story short, I grew up in Florida, more in specific, Orlando, and lived majority of my life here. It wasn’t until I was about 11 that my family uprooted to Bermuda; where my dad is from. To be honest with you, that’s where I say my story really begins because it wasn’t until then that I really fell in love with music and acting, the whole industry scene! My twin brother and I worked on our craft day and night, so much so that it impacted our decision to be homeschooled- besides the bullying- that way we could work on it even more. It became our escape while living there. Once I turned 14, we moved back here to the states, finished out High-School and worked a few 9-5s in between. During that time, I was able to find myself, hone in on my talents, and perfect them. It solidified the idea that the typical job was not for me and that I needed to be my own boss. I also started networking and venturing out, building the foundation that I stand on presently.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
A smooth road it has not. While living in Bermuda, I struggled with bullying. Whether it was for my “American” accent, or the way I acted, or my interests, I became a target quickly. When explaining my story, I stated that I was homeschooled, and bullying was the primary reason. I just couldn’t handle it anymore. When I came back to the states, I was faced with another obstacle, and that was self-identity. For most of my teen years, I struggled with confidence and social anxiety. I couldn’t walk into a room without being nervous, and those struggles not only affected my everyday life but my career as well. It stopped me from moving forward in more ways than one. It’s cliche to say that “the only person standing in your way is you” but it’s true. Once I realized that I worked to overcome that obstacle by taking the time to learn myself and put any preconceived notions to the side. I needed to become reacquainted with Jullian, which was a process, but it helped tremendously. I was able to construct a new narrative and walk into the next chapter of my life with a clear head.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Well, if you didn’t know, I’m into music! In all seriousness, music has been my one true passion since I was 5. There isn’t a single day that goes by where I’m not either listening to, writing or creating music. It’s what I eat, sleep, and breathe. Apart from music, I’m also into acting and screenplay writing! I take time studying monologues, my facial expressions, my diction, intonation, etc. The only thing I haven’t mastered is crying on command, but I’ll get there! Since the beginning of the pandemic, my brother and I have been running our YouTube Channel, “The Bascome Twins,” where we dissect and analyze music! It took time to find our niche, but we figured we should do the thing that comes naturally. Thankfully, there has been a lot of success as we currently have over 70,000 subscribers, which is crazy! It’s given us the opportunity to network, go on business trips, connect with other YouTubers and meet people from all over the world! It’s exciting and scary at the same time! The name I’ve created for myself has allowed me to reach a larger audience with my talents and I can’t wait to see what else is in store!
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Oh my God, I love this question! I am a firm believer in taking risks. In order to be comfortable, you have to be uncomfortable. Throughout my life, I’ve been very hesitant to go for what I want, but if this past year has taught me anything, it’s that the best thing you can do for yourself is take a risk. I used to be a shy person; however, the industry I’m in forced me to come out of my shell and put myself out there, which in itself is a risk because you never know how you’re going to be perceived. It’s scary to think that I’m out there for the world to see, but in the end, that leap of faith is so rewarding. We don’t get anywhere in life playing a scared game and I’m proof of that. Take the risk or lose the chance. High risk, high reward.
