Rising Stars: Meet Kabrena Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kabrena Williams.

Hi Kabrena, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was a burnt-out clinician that had recently left a job that burnt me out and felt compelled to start my wellness journey. I had made some progress but not enough to feel confident advocating for my needs as it pertains to self-care. A year later, I was laid off during the peak of Covid and found myself grappling with the fact that I hadn’t really taken great care of myself like I should have. This time, it was different. I couldn’t make the excuse that I didn’t have the time I was fighting resistance in the very beginning, but it was during quarantine that I created what I like to call ‘self-care rituals.’ I am now a full-time content creator and blogger and enjoy it very much. I love promoting wellness to others and offering self-care reminders to prioritize one’s wellness while also giving them an honest glimpse of my own wellness trek.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road whatsoever. I think there’s beauty there though. I don’t know anyone that I’ve looked up to that hasn’t had struggles along the way. I am an advocate for self-care and self-love. That means I am also empowering myself to be aware of, not critical of my mistakes. That takes a generous amount of self-awareness to be able to do that.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
By trade, I am a behavior analyst and dance teacher at a Visual Performing Arts High School. I have danced all my life and so, when I went off to college, I studied dance while eventually settling on anthropology and linguistics at the University of Florida. I knew that I wanted to further my education but needed a break so, I took one. Five years from graduating with my bachelor’s, I obtained my master’s and became a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.

I specialize in creating behavioral intervention programs for individuals with autism-so yeah, I’m hella proud of this achievement. I am also an adjunct dance instructor at Booker High School and I equally love doing this work. I am impacting and making a difference with studies who are just trying to navigate the new normal. Creating dance work has been an interesting journey to say the least. I’ve had to think of new ways to choreograph and set work on dancers that are used to being closer than 6 feet. I am known for being rebellious in the way that I don’t just do “one thing”, I do this and I do that. I’m a dance teacher but also a clinician. This is what sets me apart from others and I deeply believe it lends me the opportunity to connect with others online with my blog.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I’ve learned that not everything is so cookie-cutter. I have just recently taken my blog to a business and I’ve learned that when creating, I have to trust my gut. There’s no book out there that tells you how to do ‘my journey’. Sure, there are general tips and strategies but my pace is mine.
