Rising Stars: Meet Karen Reid

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Reid.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised in London, England.  At the age of 25, I fell in love and got married.  I made one of the biggest, hardest, and most courageous moves – I left my whole family and moved to the US to be with my husband at the time. I believed in the ‘fairytale’ romantic marriage!  After two beautiful daughters and fifteen years of marriage, we separated.  My whole world crumbled – it was devastating!  At the time of my separation, we were living in Washington state.

My husband relocated and I stayed back in Washington with my children.  After much thought and discussion – I decided that me and my daughters could do with a fresh start so I packed up everything, sold our house, and moved across to the opposite side -sunny Florida!
When I moved into my place – there was nothing- no furniture -food -nothing.  Just what we needed was a real fresh start and I would not have had it any other way!  It was challenging for all three of us – especially for my children – they had to go through many changes in a short space of time.  To help me through it all I had to rely on my faith, prayer, many tears, counseling for all three of us, and support from friends and family.
Five years later I’m happy I moved to Florida and things are looking up!  Moving forward on a lighter note Last year around this time, I was talking to my close friend, Shante Brooks -who is an entrepreneur- about my goals and dreams. I told him about the fact that I had created a natural oil and scrub for my youngest daughter because of her eczema. I expressed to him that I would love to have my own business one day. He asked me what was stopping me from having that business now. I said money! The next day he surprised me and got me all the things I would need to start my online Etsy business called Serenity Self Care.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a real struggle! I am new to all of this and so I’m in the early stages of running an online business. I realize trying to sell and promote your business online and social media is not enough. You have to attend events and get your name out there! This year I am going to be attending more events to help promote my business. I have been invited to be one of the artists at Crossroad Art Showcase- Cinco De Mayo- May 5th at 8pm – 5515 W Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway Kissimmee FL and also Art Walk Orlando – May 14th 3-11pm at the Ace Cafe Orlando location.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
For my natural cosmetics- Serenity Self Care products – I have created two products that are designed to be used on all skin types and all hair types. These products were made by myself in my kitchen. All handmade natural organic ingredients. I take pride in making the best possible products for my customers. My products are made with ‘Tender Love and Care!’

I love my products- they smell good, feel good and offer great results. I made these products for everyone! I have a diverse customer base that use these products and they all seem to say the same thing…they love the scent of the oil and the scrub and how smooth it makes their skin feel. They are surprised by how lightweight the oil is…I call the oil – ‘Hydration in a bottle!’ The scrub can not only be used on your face and body but also in your scalp. Using the scrub with your favorite shampoo to create a scalp scrub will help to promote a clean healthy scalp and hair growth.

I’m an owner of a natural cosmetics line, I’m an artist and a writer…I wrote my first poetry book last year October called Absolutely Lovely by Karen Marie that you can purchase on the Amazon Kindle App

I am also an abstract artist. I am proud of my art because I pour all of my emotions into every piece of art I create. My artwork is original and expressive.

Painting has become a God Send I find painting has helped me to manage stress and also has helped me to open up more!

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I have many wonderful memories -I used to love to dance, sing and act.  I loved to watch an 80’s show called Fame – I would dance around and follow their choreography.  I would make up my own dance routines by myself and with much persuasion, I would get my friends to also join in!  I was obsessed with Janet Jackson, Jody Watley, Pebbles, and Karyn White – I would try to sing and dance like them!  Another fond memory I have. We use to have big family parties where everyone would just be dancing laughing and having fun!
