Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Berrian.
Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
After getting married in 2012, I was convinced I would become a photographer. I invested in a computer and started watching every YouTube video I could find. I bought a camera on a whim and went back down the YouTube rabbit hole. I even toured our local community college’s photography program. In the end, life happened, and that got pushed to the back burner. Then my daughters were born, and we started having professional pictures done for every one of their milestones. It made me fall in love with photography all over again. I started Grey Ann Photography officially in 2019; Grey & Ann are my daughters’ middle names. It was a slow start, but I began getting many inquiries for family sessions from clients traveling to Daytona from out of town who wanted sessions on the beach. In 2021 I found the photography community online and realized how much education there was. I signed up for a retreat with Naomi Hopkins, based out of Atlanta, and began to dive deep into learning everything about family photography. I saw my photography art and business grow slowly in just a year.
Would it have been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not! Right after I started in 2019, I was admitted to the hospital for my gallbladder and ended up being in for 8 days. I didn’t start doing sessions again for months afterward. And then we all know what a disaster 2020 was. Although I think our being in Florida helped. Many people started coming here for vacation because the Covid restrictions in their home states were more strict than here.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
When I first started, I would take anything I could get, but I found that motherhood pulls at my heartstrings. Families and maternity are my passion. Mothers are truly the heart of the family, and I love showing families how beautiful they are. I tailor my sessions to each family. I want to capture what is important and unique to your family specifically. I value the client experience. I don’t want to just give you beautiful pictures; I want the experience to become a memory. I want you to reflect on the images and fondly remember that session. One thing that sets me apart is my client’s wardrobe. I have curated a selection of gorgeous pieces that photograph well with my editing style and are always size-inclusive. I love helping take the stress off mom, trying to coordinate outfits for everyone. Styling is important to elevate your images, and I love working with my clients to create images they can hang in their homes.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Nearly every summer, my family would go to St. Augustine for a week at the same condo. My dad grew up there, and we would spend the week going to our favorite restaurants and looking for shark teeth on the beach. My parents kept a glass in our house full of the shark teeth we found. Every so often, I would go through them and look at all the shapes and sizes. It is such a fond memory that we now have our glass of shark teeth.
