Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Farfan-Selim
Hi Katherine, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
For over 20 years, I have been teaching dance and fitness. In the past decade, I’ve focused on working closely with women over 55. The passing of my grandmother in 2021 was a huge turning point for me. It made me realize I didn’t want to lose more women in my life to preventable illnesses. There had to be a better way. I also knew there were many other women who meant the world to others, and they didn’t want to see their mothers or grandmothers face the same fate. Most importantly, I wondered what I could do to ensure a different outcome for myself and others.
I decided I was going to do research. What I found was that most of these illnesses and complications were directly related to the kind of lifestyle we lead. A lot of the women I spoke to said that they started seeing a decline in their health in their 40’s but more so in their 50’s. They had the desire to change their lifestyle but didn’t know how, or they were trying all sorts of methods and not getting any results or they kept starting over only to fail and start all over. Some were so exhausted, they just concluded that since they were already getting old, why even try?
I decided to develop a program that would fix these struggles. I began to develop and test my classes and training methods using my online dance and fitness classes and videos. I tested it on 6 women between the ages of 55-75, some with pre-existing conditions. The results were amazing!
They were not only losing unwanted pounds, but were gaining lean muscles. They were able to get their numbers down and off of medications. Their energy levels were up and they were sleeping better than ever. Balance and posture improved and they were literally in the best shape of their lives.
Now I was ready to share it with the world!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One interesting challenge was that I’m not over 55 myself, so I had to go beyond my own experience and truly listen to what these women were going through. That meant engaging in some very honest—and sometimes uncomfortable—conversations. Many of them felt like they had lost their identity because their bodies couldn’t do what they once could. They shared the frustration of struggling to keep up with their grandkids and feeling like a part of themselves was slipping away. It wasn’t just about physical fitness; it was about reclaiming confidence and a sense of purpose. By listening closely, I was able to design a program that addresses these deeper challenges—helping them feel strong, energized, and truly capable again.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have developed a program, Mojo For Life, that empowers women 55+ to reclaim their strength, health, and confidence by offering a comprehensive approach that goes beyond traditional fitness. It’s designed to help them lose weight, build lean muscle, and regain energy, so they can stay active and keep up with their families, especially their grandkids. By addressing challenges like balance, flexibility, and functional strength, your program focuses on helping them maintain independence and prevent injuries, all while building habits that support long-term health. It’s about transforming how they feel physically and emotionally—ensuring they can fully enjoy their lives and feel confident as they age.
In addition to the program, I offer a free Facebook group called DanceFit Hub, created specifically for women 55+ who want to reconnect with their confidence, fitness, and joy through movement. It’s a welcoming space where members can share their journeys, learn about health and fitness, and gain support from a community of like-minded women. In DanceFit Hub, we focus on accessible dance and fitness routines, self-care strategies, and tips to keep energy levels up as we age. The group is filled with resources, live events, and discussions tailored to address the unique challenges and goals of women over 55, offering a fun, uplifting environment for personal growth and connection.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Starting an online fitness business was definitely a leap of faith and came with its share of risks. One of the biggest challenges was shifting from in-person classes, where I could connect directly with clients, to a virtual setting. I wasn’t sure if the same energy and sense of community would translate online, especially for women over 55 who might not be as familiar or comfortable with digital platforms. COVID actually helped push this transition forward, though—it became essential to create a virtual experience that truly worked, especially for my students who depended on that interaction and support.
I invested heavily in technology, from setting up a user-friendly platform to creating high-quality video content, without knowing if it would pay off. There was also the financial risk—stepping away from the stability of traditional fitness work to build something new meant betting on myself and the vision I had for helping women reclaim their health online. But perhaps the biggest risk was creating a program without having that exact lived experience myself, which required extensive research, testing, and a willingness to adapt based on client feedback. Looking back, those risks made the business what it is today, pushing me to innovate, connect deeply with clients, and ultimately build something lasting and impactful.
