Today we’d like to introduce you to Lulu Chen
Hi Lulu, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When I graduated from college, I carried two burning desires in my heart: to see the world and to one day own an art studio. At the time, I couldn’t see how these dreams could coexist, let alone come to life. But as I sought direction, the Lord spoke to me clearly—He asked me to seek His kingdom first.
With a heart full of questions but faith to follow, I surrendered my dreams to Him. It wasn’t easy. Letting go of the vision of my art studio felt like saying goodbye to a piece of myself. But I trusted that His plans were greater, so I “burned the ship,” choosing not to look back, and joined Youth with a Mission (YWAM).
What followed was more than I could have imagined. Over the next decade, I lived on three different continents. I learned new languages, embraced diverse cultures, and witnessed how beautifully unique life can be around the world. There were trials, yes, but also moments of unspeakable joy and awe as I walked in step with Him. Through these years, God expanded my understanding and enriched my life in ways my younger self could never have foreseen.
Eventually, my family and I landed in the United States, I began teaching art at a local art school. For several years, I poured my heart into the students and the work there. Then, quietly but persistently, the dream of owning my own art studio resurfaced. At first, I dismissed it—unsure of how to make it work or if it was even possible. But as I prayed, the dream grew louder.
Year after year, the pull toward this calling became undeniable. Eventually, I stepped out in faith, thanking my school for all it had taught me and taking a leap into the unknown. I didn’t have all the answers, and part of me was afraid, but the peace of knowing I wasn’t walking this path alone gave me courage.
Without a perfect commercial space to rent, I decided to start small—right here in my own home. I transformed part of our house into a creative haven, a space where young artists could explore and grow. It’s not the grand studio I once envisioned, but it’s the perfect beginning.
As a homeschooling mom, it feels natural to serve the homeschooling community. I understand their values and challenges, and I love that this journey allows me to spend more time with my own children while pursuing the dream God reignited in my heart.
Artsy Hearts Studio is a testimony of God’s faithfulness, a story of dreams surrendered and returned in His perfect timing. Every child who walks into my studio is a reminder that what starts as a small seed of faith can blossom into something beautiful.
I’m grateful for the twists, turns, and adventures that led me here. And I’m excited to see what lies ahead as this dream continues to unfold.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting Artsy Hearts Studio has been an incredible journey, but not without challenges. Becoming a Step Up for Students provider to support families required countless hours of paperwork, phone calls, and navigating a confusing process. At times, it felt overwhelming.
Another hurdle was earning parents’ trust. Inviting families into my home meant addressing their natural hesitations. With open communication and patience, I worked hard to show the care and thought put into creating a safe, nurturing space. Slowly but surely, trust was built, and the journey continued forward.

At Artsy Hearts Studio, I wear many hats as both an artist and a teacher, but everything I do is driven by my passion for inspiring others through art. I specialize in teaching art to both kids and adults, designing fun, engaging, and thoughtful curriculums that make creativity accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Whether it’s introducing children to the basics of art or helping adults rediscover their creative side, my goal is always to make art interesting and meaningful to my students.
What sets me apart is my heart for children. I’m often told that I have a gift for connecting with kids on a deeper level. I don’t just teach them how to create art—I build relationships, listen to their stories, and care about their lives. I believe that art is more than just making something beautiful; it’s a way for kids to express themselves and feel seen, valued, and supported.
What I’m most proud of is creating a space where my students feel safe to explore, grow, and express who they are. Watching them light up with confidence as they complete a project or try something new brings me so much joy.
Art is a journey, and I’m honored to walk alongside my students as they discover their own creative voices. My studio isn’t just about teaching techniques; it’s about nurturing hearts, fostering connection, and helping each student feel proud of who they are—on and off the canvas.
