Rising Stars: Meet Micahel Dennis of Orlando Florida

Today we’d like to introduce you to Micahel Dennis

Hi Micahel, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story seems simple, but it is intertwined with fate, luck, and talent. My start began in college, not knowing what I wanted to do, trying to start a career path that everybody expected me to do. As I progressed into my career, I realized that the normal path wasn’t for me, and it was becoming boring, mundane, and uneventful. I had lost the sparkle that truly made me happy. My decision to get out of the funk by buying some paints and canvas. When I conversed with my father about changing my career to an artist, his response was do not get any paint on the carpet. It seems ironic, but this is how I started my first collection without any training. Even though I was shamed and harassed by some of the professors that were supposed to help me, I persevered by catching the attention of a very famous artist named Pucci Noriega. She saw the talented me and gave me the attention that I deserved. Within that year, I painted my first paintings, under her tutelage, that was published in an art magazine that made my career take off. After this event, I never looked back focusing on my career, but finishing my education in art history, having my own collection, pushing the envelope expressing myself through my Art. My recent graduation from the University of Central Florida (UCF) projected me to seek graduate school in Paris, France. Even though I am saying goodbye to Orlando. My plan is to leave with a bang by having a major art show that will show new paintings, sculptures and installations about my experiences. My thanks go to my father, my sister, my friends by keeping me humble while pushing the envelope in my art. In the end, grabbing cheap paint and making my first artwork led me to be published in three art magazines while showing in galleries, museums, and art festivals through this country as well as internationally.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The struggle that I faced was not realizing how competitive and judgmental the art community is. Truthfully, how modern art varies from person to person, city to city, and generation to generation. However, if the road was smooth it would be boring.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a modern painter and sculptor who dabbles in surrealism. I am known for my use of expressive bold colors and abstract women that are inspired by the strong women in my life. Along with the use of pop culture, historical references, and expression of my life. I am proud of my work is always evolving through different mediums but remaining true to itself. What set me apart from others is that I experienced life at its raw form. I express myself through my work in a new way and form.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
A little faith can go a long way. You should focus on your techniques. Remember to think outside of the box and do your work without copying others. This makes you look bad. I wish I knew when I started that people could be cruel and allow your work to speak for itself.
