Today we’d like to introduce you to Mika Thompson
Hi Mika, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Mika Thompson, Floyd McCollum and Steve Enoch. We are the Prairie Coal Kickers. We come from all different backgrounds. I, Mika, am from Arkansas and Floyd and Steve are from Pennsylvania. I, Mika, have performed all over the US including: Branson, MO, Pigeon Forge, TN, Myrtle Beach, SC, (working for a Dolly Parton company),Las Vegas, NV, Orlando, FL and every where in between. Floyd and Steve have performed all over the US as well. We met through bands and mutual friend in the Orlando/Celebration FL area. I was introduced to Floyd when I joined a Denmark based rock band that had relocated to Celebration, FL. I also played with Floyd in a so called boy band, LFO that went on tour back in 2017. Floyd and I continued together playing in several other bands which included rock, country and even jazz. I was introduced to Steve through Floyd. The three of us became the backing band for Jaclyn Hayden out of Nashville.. We parted ways with her and formed our own band, Prairie Coal Kickers. We currently play at Ol’Red and various venues around the Orlando area.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For the most part it has been smooth. We all get along, which is a rare thing in a band. We all respect each others ideas. We are almost like brothers. We did have a difficult time parting from Jaclyn, which is why we formed our own band.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in music. I have a Bachelor of Music Education/Performance from AR State University. I taught school for several years before I pursued my musical/performance career. I worked for a Dolly Parton company called Dixie Stampede. I was the MC/Comedian. I was with the company for 10 years. I was promoted to Production Manager later, but still a performer. I am very proud of this accomplishment. I am currently recording songs that I have written. This is what sets the band apart. We perform a lot of originals, so we are not just a cover band. Two songs have been released, a third is about to be released with several more on the way.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
No big shifts or changes. We will remain together and explore different venues branching out from the Orlando area. If anything we will add instrumentation. We know several other musicians that we have played with from time to time that are willing to join.
