Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Rockwell.
Hi Olivia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I dreamed of coming back to Orlando since I interned from Walt Disney Imagineering in 2018, but after I graduated from Penn State University, I moved to Pittsburgh, PA, to pursue a career in construction. After moving around a few times for work and getting engaged to my best friend while we were living across the country from each other, COVID brought us back together again in PA.
In March 2020, I was just one interview away from a dream job working in construction management at Disney, but when COVID hit, the need for that job dissolved, and I began missing Disney fiercely. COVID made it very hard to stay motivated. So, I started my Disney Instagram page in hopes of bringing some magic to my daily life. It became such an amazing outlet for my creativity, but it made me miss Disney even more. Fast forward to November 2020, my Instagram was just two months old, and I had began searching for a job in the Orlando area. My fiance called me at work one day with great news; he got a job, and we were moving to Florida! Since we moved here, I got a job, we bought a house and I feel like my life has really just begun! I think I am still searching for my passion, and I can’t wait to uncover it!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest obstacle to getting where I am today was most certainly COVID. Not only did it affect the job market and make it very hard to find anything to apply to, but it also really took a toll on my mental state. Luckily, I’ve grown so much in the past year, even due to the struggles and I am looking forward to moving forward!
Another thing I have struggled with is not knowing if I made the right choice career path-wise. I love the construction field, but I’m not sure if I have nailed down exactly the role I want to play in the industry. A goal of mine for the future is definitely exploring different realms of construction and choosing a position that is fit for my talents.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Right now in my life, I am really embracing creativity. As much as I love the construction field, I am finding the most fulfillment in embracing my Instagram as a creative space. I would say on my account @themagicallifeofliv. I am known for creating very colorful images and I am very proud of being able to share some of the amazing memories I have from working in Walt Disney Imagineering.
I really hope that I can use my account to connect with young Disney lovers who are interested in STEM and would like to learn more about how Disney utilizes engineers and technicians, especially those with a creative side! Maybe in turn, I will learn more about myself along the way. I am also embracing creativity through planning my wedding! It’s been fun to connect the construction estimator and DIY lover within me! I’m finding that I am a pretty skilled event planner.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I am really inspired by fellow creators on both an artistic and personal level! Luckily Instagram was the main way that I made friends in anticipation of moving to Florida! I’m lucky to have so many great role models.
