Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruth García.
Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
During the pandemic, the first days were chaotic due to the uncertainty of what we would do during the indefinite period of being locked up at home. Being a family of faith, we prayed for God to give us direction, and at that moment, a voice came that said: Do a schedule. I started with my children with what we call “Mommy’s School,” where we learned new things, including preparing healthy meals for the whole family daily.
One day we had bananas about to go bad, and I wanted to find a recipe to make banana bread. I had never baked them but was determined to make them delicious and healthy for everyone to enjoy. I found a recipe online that I loved the ingredients, and I added and took out a few things. We all loved it from the first bite, even the pickiest eater in my family. In subsequent days God spoke to my heart and told me to make a post on our community’s Facebook page and sell banana loaves of bread. It sounded crazy, but I decided to do it because I knew its purpose. Each bread would carry a verse and message from God in its wrapper. That day we sold around 40 loaves. The result was unexpected, and that was when I knew the name of this crazy adventure would be: Going Bananas for Jesus. For four months, we made 100 to 200 loaves of bread for free every two weeks for an entity called “God’s Table” that brings food to needy people. That move was also a leap of faith because it was all made in my home kitchen in an oven that could only fit six loaves for each baking turn. Each piece of bread carried a message from God with a packaging full of details. God be glorified! While we did that, we continued to sell our loaves of bread online, and our menu began to grow. We started doing activities in my house, things like prayer groups and training workshops on different topics for the community, where we offered our products and services for free. Everything was to carry the message of the love of Jesus.
God kept moving us through many giant leaps of faith, the biggest being my husband’s. Samuel left his very successful CPA firm to go head-to-head with God’s call to Going Bananas for Jesus. Right now, we are serving our community for free with our Going Bananas for Jesus Coffee Gathering located in our home. It is where the table is served, and we pay special attention to everyone who enters. It is quite an experience. We also have a website where you can order for your enjoyment, gifts, and special events. God has given us the desire to serve and show in everything we do at Going Bananas for Jesus the love of God. First, we are witnesses of his love, and now, we are the instruments of his love.
You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
It’s been quite an amazing ride, just like a roller coaster with ups and downs. But we know we are in the right place doing exactly what we are supposed to do, which overpowers everything else.
Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The pandemic was scary, but it’s scarier living through that kind of crisis and not being able to grow from it. We have definitely learned that there’s beauty in the uncertainty or the unknown. It’s the perfect opportunity to grow and trust that God is still in control in every season and in every circumstance. He will use every season of our lives to form us into a better version of ourselves for our good and to be impactful to others.
