Rising Stars: Meet Sadisleidy Alvarez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sadisleidy Alvarez.

Hi Sadisleidy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I have always been a Disney fan since I was a little girl. I am basically a 4-year-old in a 27-year-old’s body. About a year ago, I was blessed to have a princess of my own, my daughter Aria. My passion for all things Disney has rubbed off on her so much so that her favorite movies/princesses are Moana and Frozen. Moana songs have been playing in my house for months now Haha. So, my boyfriend and I were planning a trip to Disney this upcoming September since I am expecting a baby boy in November and we want to take Aria one more time before the year ends. I came across an Etsy page that made toddler sunglasses with simple designs such as rainbows, flowers, and “bedazzles” and thought to myself that I can make my daughter a pair with some of her favorite characters on them. I’m the type of person to have a backup for my backup, so I ordered a couple of sunglasses and a few materials and just got to make some Disney-themed sunglasses. I made some for the babies in our family and for close friends of ours and everyone suggested I started my own business making some, and after much thought, I decided to launch Simply Shadies. Since then, I have been receiving a lot of compliments on my “side hustle,” and to be honest, this has kept me pretty sane while dealing with my pregnancy and with a toddler Haha.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
To be honest, like many things in life, it has been a lot of trial and error. Especially with different glue brands, beads, etc. Also, although I have fair prices, people always see small business prices as a bit more than regular bulk prices. But smooth sea never made a skillful sailor!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I pour my heart out into my work. Every single pair of sunnies is made with love, and I dedicate much time to each of them. I try to make my customers as happy as possible and provide many options for them to select from (from beads to glasses frames to characters available). I don’t only have Disney characters; I also have Harry Potter, Minions, etc. as well as simple figures like unicorns, watermelons, and others. What sets me apart from others is that I try not to clutter the glasses too much because even though they are for toddlers, I want to make sure they’re able to see through whatever design I give the glasses.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
In my opinion, anyone who is starting a business takes risks. Risk of “failing” of not being able to build your business the way you want to. At this point in life, I decided to just go for it because it’s something I enjoy doing. I have always been creative and have a background in Public Relations and Marketing, so I decided to put those skills to good use.
