Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Devia
Hi Samantha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up cooking/baking was something my entire family was passionate about. My father would stand me on a chair and I’d we’d prepare arepas from scratch for Sunday breakfast. My grandmother was the opposite she would not let anyone near her flans for fear that they’d disrupt her process. I loved watching everyone faces as they enjoyed food that was made with love.
After college I have been waiting tables at WDW ever since and Sweet Virgo was born from me wanting to share delicious recipes with friends and coworkers. After hearing “You could definitely start a business and sell these” a million times – I took a leap of faith and signed up for my first market.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
A smooth journey only because I refuse to allow the bumps in the road hold be back.
For example if an outdoor market had to be cancelled due to weather after I’ve spent 36 hours baking/preparing – Then I’d just take some deep breaths and think of it as more practice and experience to add under my belt.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
It all started being about my tres leches cakes. I was so excited to hear feedback from folks at markets in real time. Sweet Virgo also brings a variety of treats to the table that have evolved and grown in quality along with us.
It is our mission to deliver delicious treats and good energy at every event we attend.
As a chatty person who could hold up a conversation with just about anyone – markets have connected me with a whole rainbow of amazing people around town.
There are other INCREDIBLE dessert vendors out in our community and we feel humbled and blessed to stand alongside them.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
When Sweet Virgo was being put together I had a lot of conversations regarding risk.
Money was obviously a big topic when it came to risk factors.
How much time would it take away from my full time job, and would my gross profits offset that.
Faith in my product and brand helped me push through that anxiety. Putting a plan together that outlines the risks and rewards was the only way to move forward.
What should my prices be and should they reflect what the vendor fee cost for a certain event ?
It all came down to putting myself in the shoes of a consumer.
If I walked by my booth – how much would I be willing to pay for this brownie? Risk is always present – but it doesn’t have to be the boogeyman.
