Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Geerts.
Hi Samantha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I got started with photography during my teenage years when I took classes in both middle and high school. To be honest, I initially chose these classes because they were easy A electives and didn’t think much of them at the time. I was focused on taking more challenging courses that seemed more critical for my academic future, as at that time I wanted to go to school for medical and biology. Which I ended up not going threw with.
It’s funny to think that those early classes, which I took just to boost my grades, have brought me to where I am today. I’ve discovered a genuine passion for photography and now always find a reason to go out and capture something, including the events for PTA at the school I currently work.
My real turning point came when I had my own child. Watching him grow made me realize how much I wanted to pursue photography seriously. I think my interest also comes from my grandpa, who was always behind the camera at family events. Ironically, if you ask him, he’d say I was always running away from the camera because I didn’t like having my photo taken, but he always managed to capture me.
I didn’t start my professional photography career until after Covid, mainly due to the cost of equipment. Fortunately, my grandparents and my dad helped me out with a Christmas gift in 2022, which was my first real camera. This allowed me to start building my portfolio with free sessions and to refine my skills and style. As my business continues to grow, I upgraded to a professional camera at the beginning of 2024. I’m really excited to see where this journey will take me next.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. As a newer photographer in a saturated market, breaking into the field has been challenging. There’s a lot of competition, and with the current economic climate, many people are finding it difficult to afford photography services. This makes it harder to establish a client base and make a name for myself.
However, I’ve been fortunate to have support from Andrea Spann and her daughter. They’ve been instrumental in helping me practice my photography skills, from perfecting poses to bringing my creative ideas to fruition. Additionally, my family has been incredibly supportive, sharing resources and encouragement. Their backing means a lot and keeps me motivated. I’m positive that, with perseverance and continued effort, I’ll eventually get my name out there and achieve my goals.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in family photography, with a particular focus on senior photos. I also enjoy creating themed sessions, like mermaids and fairies, and I dabble in sports photography as well. What sets me apart is my diverse range of offerings—I don’t just stick to the typical mini sessions. For example, I offer unique themed sessions such as “Goodbye Earl” Halloween shoots, which aren’t commonly found among photographers.
One of my recent highlights was shadowing Dena Ray from Dena Ray Photography for my first wedding experience. It was an incredibly fun and valuable learning opportunity, and I’m excited to eventually add wedding photography to my skill set.
I’m most proud of my ability to bring imaginative and personalized touches to each session, creating memorable experiences and unique images for my clients.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I’d like to extend my gratitude to everyone who takes the time to read this. If you have a passion or a hobby, I encourage you to pursue it. You never know where it might lead you or what opportunities it might bring. Embracing your interests can open doors and lead to fulfilling experiences you might not have imagined. Thank you for your support and encouragement!
