Today we’d like to introduce you to San Smith
Hi San, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I first ventured into the floral industry when I had the opportunity to design flowers for a friend’s wedding. That experience sparked my passion for floristry, and I quickly realized how much it fueled my creativity. It was then that I decided to leave my job in the school district to pursue my dream of becoming a floral designer. I started by assisting another florist with weddings and events, gaining valuable hands-on experience. When the opportunity arose to purchase a flower shop, I took the leap and made it my own. Since then, I’ve immersed myself in various workshops and conferences, continuously learning new techniques and refining my craft. Every day, I strive to improve and grow as a floral artist.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The floristry industry can be quite challenging, especially as a local flower shop in a large city like Orlando. We’re competing for weddings and events alongside many other vendors, which can make it tough at times. However, I never let these challenges deter me. I always strive to provide exceptional service and ensure my customers are happy, as building strong relationships and earning their loyalty is my top priority.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I absolutely love working on weddings and events, but during the summer season, I enjoy focusing on the retail side of my flower shop. It allows me to stay connected with flowers on a daily basis, which is something I’m truly passionate about. My design style tends to lean towards a modern, garden-inspired aesthetic—something unique and fresh, rather than traditional. However, if a bride prefers a more classic style, I always ensure that the design is beautiful and timeless.
What truly makes me proud is when my customers receive their floral arrangements and express how much they love them. Positive feedback, especially when I get glowing reviews on Google, always fills me with a sense of accomplishment. But the most rewarding moments are when my brides are so overwhelmed with joy that they can’t even find the words to describe how stunning their wedding flowers turned out. That kind of emotional reaction is the ultimate satisfaction for me.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was always a curious and creative person. I loved exploring different forms of art, whether it was drawing, crafting, or working with nature. I was the type of kid who would spend hours outside, fascinated by the beauty of flowers, plants, and how everything in nature seemed to come together so harmoniously. I think that connection to nature is what eventually led me to floristry.
I was also very detail-oriented and had a strong sense of determination. Once I set my mind on something, I would dive deep into it, whether it was a school project, a hobby, or a personal goal. This trait has stayed with me, and it’s something I rely on in my work today—whether I’m designing a floral arrangement or running my own business.
I’ve always had a love for bringing beauty to life, whether through art or other forms of expression, and I think that’s what really shaped my interests as I got older, eventually leading me to pursue a career in floristry.”
