Rising Stars: Meet Sanchez Lewis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sanchez Lewis.

Sanchez Lewis

Hi Sanchez, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
Well, firstly, I’m an artist. The artist’s name I go by is Chezzo. I’m 19 and from The Bahamas. I came to the US last year to focus on my music and to achieve what I ultimately want to achieve in this field. I want to be great, not just for the fame or the money, but mainly to get my message out there. Music wasn’t only sometimes my first option, though. I started wanting to be an NBA player as my ultimate profession, and music was a side thing to help me with my emotions, but about a couple of years ago, I realized that music might be the best thing for me. I started creating in 2015 and found my footing with music in 2021. Before I moved to the S, in the summer of 22′, I got kicked out of my parent’s home by someone who didn’t live there. I know it sounds crazy. That made me buckle up and realize that I needed to do more for myself because I’m such a giving person, but I wasn’t fully taking care of myself. I worked for about 2-3 months until I had the money to get my ticket, and on August 5th, I started my journey here. Since then, I’ve been healing from all the wounds that my hometown gave me, which I wasn’t even aware of until I did the introspection. Because of that, the quality of my music drastically changed, and it feels even more fulfilling to create than ever before.

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
It wasn’t a smooth road at all; like I mentioned, I got kicked out, and I was dealing with issues in all areas of life. My grandparents died in 2017, and they were really important to me as a child and growing up. That broke me, and the years after that weren’t helping. COVID-19 in 2020 was especially a tough year for me; I was going through financial struggles and couldn’t get to school properly online, resulting in me not receiving a diploma. I wanted to do my senior year over, but my request was denied, and I felt like the system could have done better. I have had a lot of trials and tribulations, but I have no complaints for them; they made me into who I am today.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m an artist. I specialize in all areas of music. My main genre is rap. I am very open to all forms of music because music is my passion. I am known for my lyrical gestures, punchlines, and speaking from a perspective of real life, but I can easily switch up the vibe and make any mood out of a song. That’s what sets me apart from any artist in the industry. If I can learn and soak in the knowledge, I can create any song or mood and send a message through my music. I am proud of where I started, how I adapted and learned from my mistakes, and where I am today with a chance to be big with my music.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those just starting.
My advice for starting? Just let it flow. Let everything flow, and never worry about anyone’s opinions. Keep working and soak in as much knowledge as you can. Keep an open mind because you can learn from many different perspectives. Lastly, make sure that you are in love with your craft; be obsessed with it.
