Rising Stars: Meet Semmi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Semmi.

Semmi

Hi Semmi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I started out making music at 15 in the suburbs of Philadelphia. I skateboarded and played sports, but it became my passion once I found music. I grew up listening to every style of music because I fell in love with that artist’s artistry and stories. I heard many of Eric Clapton, BB King, Temptations, and Stevie Wonder. Then, I dove into hip-hop and fell in love with Nelly after hearing country grammar, which spearheaded my musical journey. For the lyrics and technical approach, I learned from rappers like Big L, Eminem, Jadakiss, and T.I. So, by trying different styles and sounds, I could hone in on my own and then wanted to create. So I learned how to record, learned what equipment I needed, bought my own, and recorded myself every day. Trial and error mixed with some schooling led me to where I am today with my sound and engineering skills. I’m a humble artist mostly because I like to let the music speak for itself. I’ve never been a person who walks into a room and screams, “I’m the best,” but I am an artist who walks into a room, presses play, and has people saying, “Yo, who is this?!” It’s been an uphill battle with my music career as I am someone who battles addiction and alcoholism, but since I’ve become sober, it’s recharged and revamped my passion and consistency with my music. I don’t think I’d be the artist I am today without those struggles or my sobriety.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, as I listed before, I struggled with addiction and alcoholism, so that didn’t help with my consistency. I had a lot of fear and was not confident in my craft, which led to me not releasing music for years. But now I’m struggling with the new age distribution and platforms like TikTok, IG, and other services that just weren’t around when I was growing up as a student of hip hop.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
So I’m an artist, rapper to be exact. I specialize in creative bars and a lot of over-the-head wordplay. Some sing-songy sounds are like Tory Lanez and Drake or PND. I’m known for my passion for music, but if you listen to my songs, I’m known for my bars and consistency with them. I’m most proud of my work ethic. Even though I had ups and downs, I still never stopped creating music or writing. I’m most proud of writing for other people. That speaks a lot to my pen game. My cadence, flow, hooks, and bars set me apart from others. I don’t know many people who can compete with me lyrically. I’m not someone who says stuff because it sounds cool. I put a lot of effort into my hooks but twice as much into my verses.

We’d like to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
It’s split 50/50. I mean, the “bad luck” I’ve experienced was my own doing. But the good luck came from living a healthier, honest life and being true to myself, falling back in love with the process and journey, and not looking for a particular destination. Everything I consider “good luck” was the fruits of the labor.
