Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamika Greeley.
Hi Tamika, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story probably starts like most girls. When I was a little I love playing with my dolls. I would always get my dolls ready for a fashion show or just to take them out with me for an outing. I would braid their hair or cut them some bangs, change their outfit to go with the style I gave them. I started doing my friends and family hair when I was around 11 years old. I would come to Orlando for the summer and would hang out or work as an assistant to my Godmother or cousins in the salon. Then when the summer was over I would go back home to Savannah, Ga and do everything I saw and learn at the shop to my friends and family hair. During my sophomore I convents my mother to move to Orlando. An I end up graduating from Evans High school. The Class of the millennium, well let’s say rainbow of millennium. I couldn’t walk until the summer because I found out at the last minute, a class I took in Georgia didn’t count in Florida. Only God! I was child that was told I would not finish school due to having a grand mal seizure and a stork at the age of five years old. A petit mal seizure at the age 17 year old. Even though all that I was going through I was still doing my friend and family hair. When I move to Orlando, it allow me be at the shop a little more and learn more. The funny thing is, I never said in my mind that I wanted to be a Hairstylist. I wanted to be a Radiologist. Well let’s say God had other plans. Everyone would tell me that I had blessed hand. To me it one like in one ear and out the other. It wasn’t until I move back Georgia and had my second son. That this gift I was given, really was touch other people and allow me to have a flexible schedule with my family.
So, I went and finally became a Master Cosmetologist. When my Godmother found out she ask me to come be a part of the new shop they was opening in Orlando. I was super excited, but not my friends, family and clients. I had in Georgia, but I was ready for a change and plus I felt good to be doing the gift that I felt was given to me. Instead of coming to Orlando to be a shampoo/ assistant. I was now a stylist in the salon. I got to learn more and meet more people, while in this industry that has blown my mind. I also got to work with other professional hair store that expand my knowledge in hair products and color. After working in salons for years. I Finally decide to branch out on my own and brand my own business. Blu T Diamondz salon is a suite that give VIP treatment. Blu In the name of the salon breaks down to Beauty Love U! An everyone wants to shine like a diamond. It was something I prayed about. I step out on faith two years ago to peruse the vision I was given. Style and technique may change in the industry, but the one thing everybody wants is to feel good and look good. An that’s one thing I try to give my clients.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, the road has not been smooth. When I first decide to go to hair school my first son was around two years old and I was going to a private Cosmetology school and working as a CNA. While working as a CNA, I had double shift that cut in my time of begin in school to get my credit hours I needed to take the state test. I didn’t really care to much about this school because It didn’t open me up to new technique that I can learn to do any type of texture hair. Not only that my relationship was going though rough time. A right when we got things back together and I was 30 credit away from finishing the school. I found out I was pregnant with my second child. At this time I was also working on the cardio floor at the hospital in Georgia. So it was rough because here I’m back at a high risk pregnancy because of my history of seizures. So I lost another job, because of high risk situations and I could finish what I started at school. Even though I was going through, I never stop being a house beautician. After my second son I decide to go to a technical school to get my licenses. So yes I did two years of cosmetology school. It was all worth it after receiving my license, this girl was official. A now the challenges is becoming a business owner and not just a hairstylist. keeping life balance with it all and how to expand with the new challenges. Doing hair is one thing, but being the boss of your business is another thing. Everyone in business smile and try to make it look easy. But don’t tell you all the no and turn down they got before the harvest overflows.
