Today we’d like to introduce you to William Bochecchio Newberry
Hi William, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
i’ve always had an affinity for hair. it started as a child playing with dolls, my moms hair, my sisters hair. as far back as i can remember i’ve always been fascinated by it, and drawn to it. once i was finally old enough to understand how the world works, i realized i could make a career out of that passion.
initially i went to college which is where i studied psychology. once i finished my 4 year degree i immediately enrolled into the aveda institute in winter park. those 14 months weren’t always easy, but it was the best decision i ever made.
once i graduated i was working in a salon that used to be in downtown orlando called trend. i worked front desk and did assisting until i worked my way up to being a styling behind the chair. after a certain point however i had felt like i hit a wall and was looking for a new salon to grow in. that’s when i found theory salon owned by erin mills. i really discovered who i was as a stylist while working there. theory is where i realized i wanted to be a red specialist. i found how to turn my passion into a career, and then figured out how to find joy out of every day behind the chair. by choosing to do the hair that i truly love, and that excites me.
however like at trend eventually i felt like i had hit a wall, and i needed to move on to grow even more. that’s how i ended up where i am today. in my own suite running my own small business. as much as i loved working in a salon, this is definitely way more my speed. full creative control over my space and client experience. i want every client who comes to see me to have a personalized, attentive appointment. my business is set up so that i can really take my time with each client to make sure the details are truly perfect. i take pride in not only my clients hair but also their experience!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
the biggest struggles would have to be the inconsistency of this industry and building a client book from nothing. in a career like this you can be very successful. but it’s a very long, hard and grueling road to get there.
a hairstylists journey isn’t linear either. so a little advice to any hairstylists just starting out: sometimes you go forward, sometimes you go backward, sometimes you progress laterally and sometimes your career is stagnant. just keep hustling. it will feel like everything is stacked against you. but if you fight, if you persist you will become successful. never give up!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
i’m a hairstylist who specializes in copper/ and red hair. this is also what i’m known for. when i decided to specialize in red hair there was no one else at that time, that i knew of, who was doing that. still to this day my new clients always tell me they’ve never seen or heard of a copper specialist before.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
i’m big on friends and family. my relationships are very important to me. and i carry that over into my work. my parents always taught me to work hard, and take pride in your job. i create a unique relationship with every person who sits in my chair. it makes the experience that much more fun. not only for my clients, but also for me.
