We’re looking forward to introducing you to Lady Amy Mitchell. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Amy, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
I can easily lose track of time when I’m organizing the toys in my daughter’s room. Since she was born (almost 8 years ago), I’ve found organizing and staging her toys very therapeutic. I love being able to organize the Barbie shoes and clothes, and stage the Barbie house how I like. Luckily, my daughter has never minded that I move her stuff, and sometimes she even compliments me on my staging design. Doing this as a sort of therapy helps me feel centered, and find myself again.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Lady Amy, and I’m the founding tea hostess for Houses of Windsor. Most people want to know what in the world inspired me to create a British-centric tea party business. In short, blame Prince William. My love for England started when I was just 14 and across the pond for the first time. That’s when I discovered a dapper 18 year-old Prince William and fell in love with him and his country. Fast-forward to college, while I was across the pond again, I then discovered the beautiful ceremony of Afternoon Tea. Once I returned state-side, I loved hosting tea parties for friends and co-workers. Several years later, with the nudge from a good friend, I decided to turn my love of hosting tea parties into a business, and thus, Houses of Windsor was born.
What makes Houses of Windsor unique is that we are mobile, not a set location. We bring our expertise, the vintage china dishes, and delicious teas to any home or venue. We steep and serve the tea, We create a fun and memorable experience for guests. We have created such experiences for grown-up birthdays, bridal showers, baby showers, staff appreciation, and more.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I was extremely shy as a kid all the way through high school. I was only comfortable being myself around a few close friends. I never wanted to speak up or bring any attention to myself. I started to come out of my shell in college, and did so especially when I studied abroad for a semester in London. I gained confidence and became proud of my quirky personality.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Only every other day. But seriously, the negative self-talk that many of us deal with is frequently telling me to give up on running my own business and go find a so-called “safe job.” This is often echoed by certain family members. To combat this, I am persistent and keep moving towards the goals that I want to achieve. Networking and creating friendships with professionals in my industry and other fields has really helped keep me motivated and hopeful.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is very close to the real me. It’s the positive side of me that I show the most in public. I have a natural sunny disposition and can be very cheerful. I like to laugh and giggle a lot. I love to talk to people and make sure everyone feels comfortable and welcome in group settings. The side of me not shown in public is the smaller part of me that can be sad and grumpy. I like to keep that side of me private.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
I suppose that it’s the fact that I don’t put a lot of importance on legacy. I just want to do some good in the world and try to have a little fun along the way. At this point in my life, I don’t have a strong desire to be remembered in history for something special after I’m gone.
